The first religious group that came into the Caribbean from Europe was the Roman Catholic Church. As we can witness, the Roman Catholic maintained its influenced on the region as there are still many churches and followers today. From the picture below the Pastor is preaching to the enslaved Africans. However, with the knowledge conflict perspective proposed by Karl Marx which he stated that religion can be used as an "exploitative tool"against the proletariat. It can be concluded that this image states that the Pastor is doing the “business of Christianizing” the enslaved Africans. By doing this, he is leading them towards false consciousness in which is the planters want so that the enslaved Africans would continue working on the plantation and would not question authority about their rights or try to better their lives in such a way that they can be able to have a strong social control over their choices. The pastor in the picture below would have been seen as a authority figure to the slaves therefore the pastor would have thought the slaves that they are to follow the rules made by the planters. this would have ensured that the slaves would not have rebelled against the harsh conditions and life they had to face.
(Entry date: 13/04/2017)

The planters believed that once the enslaved Africans were exposed to education, they would be able to open their minds to ideas which would change their behaviors. However, the planters allowed the enslaved to gain education since it could be used as a form of maintaining control instead of whipping the enslaved Africans.

Pertaining to the picture below, it is seen that the children who looked as enslaved Africans were being thought by a teacher who looks as a bourgeoisie because of his clothing. It can be concluded that education is being exploited in the picture as it is used to inculcate the norms and values set by the bourgeoisie so that the enslaved children would be under a mind of false consciousness. In this way, they would remain as enslaved workers on the plantation as it passes the ideology of the bourgeoisie, the planters. This is known as the “hidden curriculum”. The hidden curriculum consists of; following the school’s rules, wearing the uniform properly, respecting those in authority, reaching to school on time and being rewarded or punished for success and failures respectively.

When the children of the enslaved Africans are socialized through the hidden curriculum, the bourgeoisie’s aim is to let the proletariat children take what is learnt from the hidden curriculum into the workplace to be good and obedient. From the picture, the children were seen without books or any learning material which made it difficult for them to learn. They mostly teach the children what is right and what is wrong and the punishments that are rewarded for disobedient behaviors and the gifts awarded for obedient behaviors.
(Entry date: 13/04/2017

The self-educated slave

Frederick Douglass was a self educated slave who went the extra lengths to free himself from the exploits by the planters. He once said "knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave" This quote has a little bit of irony attached to it since education was used to put the slaves in false consciousness since mainly the hidden curriculum was thought and not any valuable subjects such as English and Mathematics, etc. However, once the slave realize the purpose of the planters then they can use the education being though to rebel against the unfortunate lifestyles they had to endure.
(Entry date: 17/04/2017)

THE SECRET RELIGION OF SLAVES

According to this article the slaves were forced to convert their religion to Christianity. The slaves had no right of freedom since the only thing they had that kept them together was taken away from them forcefully. However, slaves used religion as a way of resistance since the slave masters banned their religion and only allowed them to be christianized. To rebel, the slaves would practice religious dances and rituals when the slave masters were not around. These religious practices performed by the slaves gave them a sense of unity and hope that their oppression would end. On the other hand, the slaves that were christianized thought of themselves to be equal to the slave masters and this is where the idea of false consciousness comes in. Religion in this sense was not used as a tool of oppression by the planters, but as a tool of resistance and hope by the slaves.
As seen in the picture from the article below, the slaves are dancing and playing musical instruments which looks like what they brought to the sugar estate. In the picture there is no sign of a person that looks like a planter therefore this shows that the slaves are practicing their religion by religious gatherings when the planters or slave masters are not around. The dancing and rejoicing of the slaves are a way to rebel against the system because they are finally getting to do what they want and practicing their own religion.
(Entry date: 17/04/2017

EDUCATION AND RELIGION IN TODAY'S SOCIETY AND HOW IT RELATES TO FAMILY LIFE

In today's society education acts as a steeping stone for social mobility and also the ability to gain wealth. Through education, people who are of the lower classes can move up the social ladder since the most high paid jobs are offered to 'educated' people. However some people can have as much education needed for a good job but they are still unemployed. In society today, education is mostly based on the number of marks you score on a written test, but education is more than that, education is bettering oneself and improving one's way of thinking. Education plays a critical role in the family life since it brings a certain amount of status to your family if you become educated, but the family may or may not be able to gain substantial amount of wealth due to the lack of prestigious jobs available.
The idea of religion today is totally different from religion that existed in the 16th century. Now persons have a free choice of which religion they want to be even if they are born into a certain religion within the family system, religion plays a very important part as it shows society your beliefs and morals which they would judge you upon.Religion on the other hand can separate people into groups. some groups may feel superior to other groups and the other groups may be judged upon. For example, the Muslim community is feared and frowned upon because of the fact that ISIS calls themselves an Islamic state. Within the family, some parents would only allow their children to marry someone of the same religion, this also separates the people in society.
(Entry date: 18/04/2017)
