Rehearsal process

For this piece we were able to chose what segments of the script we wanted to use and we were able to build our show around that, this meant we were able to take more ownership of the show and were able to make to flow and move the way that we wanted to. One of the biggest issues in our class has always been attendance, with a show like curious if very difficult to rehearse when people are Adsense from lesson because we are having to often build shows around people who aren't there. This also meant that when they returned they didn't know what they were doing and took up a lot of rehearsal time catching up.

One of the issue I came across was that sometimes soihan would become the narrator and address the audience instead of the other actors, this was struggle for me because it was hard for me to learn my cues when some of my lines come out of nowhere within the show, this was however something I enjoyed learning to do and getting a better experience with breaking the forth wall.

For soihan I wanted to make sure that she very natural in the way she acted, this was because curious is a very abstract piece and soihan is the reader entrance to the story so there needed to be a level of normality to her. I didn't however wanted to make her boring, this meant I needed to give her own quirks to help add and build to her character. During this process I think I was able to improve the way that I use my movement and voice to portray a character, and was able to use to technique to build on other piece have done.

I think during this process even with the issues with attendance all the actors were able to create and build strong performances that were interesting and fun to watch, one person in particular who came out of her shell was gabby, who is very soft spoken the majority of the time, during this process she was able to build as an Actor and was able to portray multiple part with in the show and was able to play a very firece Mrs shears.

One note I got from the director was that I needed to not be afraid of making soihan bigger and more loud, although I agreed I was being too soft spoken I didn't want to take away from soihan gentleness however after thinking about it I realised that it was important to relay the story in a exciting way and my voice needed to do that , this meant in certain part my voice needed to be bigger to help get this message across.

While rehearsing curious there were certain things that we tried that we realised didn't work for example, we wanted to at one point lift one of the actor playing Christopher into the air while he gave a speech about space and using this lift we would give the impression of him flying. Although we workshop this idea throughly and really like it we realised that there wasn't a clean way of executing it with the number of actor we had and with the extract we were using.

For this piece we followed the guidance of the original play and kept the cast on stage the entire time, this was really useful as curious is very fast paced and everyone being on stage meant that we were able to keep the speed up while still making it look clean and stylised.

Personally I see soihan as another mother figure to Christopher. I Believe that Christopher while think his mother was dead saw soihan as a mother figure to. Given this idea I wanted to make sure I gave the impression of a parental figure while the still making it clear that I was Christopher teacher and not his mother. some of my own contributions to the piece were able a certain level of fear to soihan, I wanted to make it clear that soihan cares very much about Christopher but knows that he is wise beyond his years and should not be underestimated, she not afraid of Christopher but she afraid of the terrible his actions might get him into.

I think that overall I was able to create a interesting performance and was able to give more layers to soihan then I had thought I could have. I think that one of my main strengths was being able to stay focus during the entire performance and being able to react well off my fellow actor who in turn gave brilliant performances, I think one of my biggest weaknesses was my confidence, for some reason when we came to actually performing the pressure suddenly hit and made me stumble a lot of my lines which frustrated because that never happens to me when I'm performing and if it does I'm able to record quickly. One of the reason I thought this was that once I started to mess up lines I couldn't stop and given that I knew that I knew my lines effected me even more.

I feel like all my performances in dress rehearsal were so my more effective and engaging than the one in front of an actual audience, when in the dress run I was able to think about what I was doing and what I needed to do next and my lines came a lot more naturally to me, and then once we had an audience my brain suddenly would not let me process all the things I needed to do and do believe it effect my performance a lot.

I think personally I needed to recap more of the things I was doing within the show to make sure I was 100% confident on what needed to do and that I completely focused on what was happening. I really think however that even with my slip up the rest of the actor put on a truely brilliant show and were able to deliverer performances that were really moving and fascinating to watch. Each actor interpreted their character in there own way and it was great to see what they all did with there performance.

As a whole I throughout enjoyed curious incident of the dog in the night time and I really Believe I learnt a lot from performing it and being able to see the stage show itself really help to focus myself on what needed to do in my own performance as well. Overwall this was a really enjoyable unit and something that I think really help to bond are class together.
