week 7 What is the impact of fixed/strict ideas about masculinity on: Individuals, society

The fixed or strict ideas can impact the masculinity of an individual or in society by making one think they need to change in order to blend in with the rest of the masculinity expectations in society. Societies' expectations of masculinity could make one think that if they are not tough, strong, 'manly', etc, they do not feel as though they can identify as a true man and may think less of themselves or as though they are not good enough.

How is difference treated at school?

At school, difference is viewed as a positive, especially given that Glenunga is an international school.

How have you approached differences?

I have approached differences as both a good and a bad thing. On one hand, I have seen how I am different to others as a bad thing, as in I am not as smart as one of my peers, I do not look like other kids my age, etc. Whereas I see how I am different in a positive way, as in I have a lot of different privileges from others. I have been given the right to an education, I have a home, I have food and water, etc.

How could things be better at school with regard to differences?

There are no things that could be better regarding the difference at school since Glenunga already offers a variety of different clubs, sports and support systems, where in reality we do not have superpowers to magically fix differences, whether they are good or bad.

What can you change personally in how you respond to differences?

I could change how I let others view me when I come into contact with someone who may differ from others. For example, people advertising the big issues do not necessarily look like an everyday person I come into contact with. Instead of walking straight past, I could smile at them or acknowledge the difference they are trying to make in the world. I also need to realise that there is not much I can do to help or change that person's life, but a simple hello could make a big difference to their day.

I think if they have had symptoms but have not been tested, they should give their partner a heads up, then proceed to go get tested, then tell their partner their results, so then they can proceed to get tested and seek treatment if needed.

What are some positive outcomes of challenging discrimination and transphobia for the transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary community?

By addressing discrimination, it can then be identified what society views as different, but more so in a bad way.
