I think this part of the series represents a controlling relationship, the kind where one partner is "wrapped around the finger" of the other. The first painting shows a power imbalance.
The second shows someone without a partner but hoping for one or making one up. 
The third shows a relationship where one "consumed" the other, perhaps by greed, being the center of attention, or the only one who's needs are met-the partner gives up themselves to nourish the other.
