George Bass was the person who proved the Tasmania was an island. This then allowed people to know that there is an island off the coast of Australia. I would consider this to be a positive effect, Australians gained more knowledge and were able to travel to see a new island.

George Bass was also the person who discovered and named a rivers and a bay in Australia, Shoalhaven River and Twofold Bay. This provided human expansion because it allowed people to know there is a river after it was discovered. When he did this it was a positive addiction to the country of Australia, new bodies of water were discovered.

Bass led him and his sailing partner Matthew Flinders to Australia, used his skills from joining the Royal Navy, he was a surgeon and a navigator. From what I have read there was never a surgery that needed to happen but strong winds and currents brought them further south then they wanted to be. Bass led them in the right direction by the sun, moon, and stars. This could be considered a positive because they might not have gotten to the right location and be able to discover the things they did.

“I think it’s nasty. I think we need to get it cleaned up and we shouldn’t be a disposal site for the coast. I don’t know if they’re doing it in other cities, but it they are, they need to be stopped all along the coastline here. It is not acceptable.” - George Bass

These two points of view are different because #1 tells the readers that he wants to do something about the shoreline of Australia/Sydney were he was exploring. #2 shows the the shore is still polluted and people today are cleaning it up.

George Bass didn’t interact with other people from what I have researched and found but he did find a new piece of land off the coast of Australia. He impacted the maps as they had to be added to once he discovered the island of Tasmania. This connect to the world today because right now there is a new island that was discovered recently. It’s called Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai and it’s in the South Pacific.

George Bass also discovered Shoalhaven River and Twofold Bay. These bodies of water then needed to be added to the maps. People now had new knowledge of their country after the Shoalhaven River and Twofold Bay were discovered by Bass. This connects to the world today because on the planet of Mars there was a discovery of a underground lake. This is similar to the river and bay found by Bass because it’s new body of water being found.

Colonization Effects (Meets)

When explorers and colonists were coming over from Europe going to Australia there was lots of effects and things brought over. One of the effects was introduction to new plants and animals. For example the camel, monarch butterfly and the buffalo were brought over from other countries to Australia. Some plants and tree that were newly introduced were the camphor tree, dwarf umbrella tree and the ardisia crenata. I would consider this to be a positive because when new plants and trees are being brought over it allows new fruits or vegetables to grows, this helps feed people, it may not be super drastic change of the amount of food but it helps.

Another effect of colonization is the facts that lots of different diseases were exchanged between countries. Sicknesses like smallpox, measles, and influenza were coming into Australia and getting people sick. This is a negative because when more and more people are getting sick with new disease where immune systems might not be strong enough to find it. The population could then drop which is never good.

The last effect I’ll talk about is deforestation and how colonists would go into forests and cut down trees. Australia is 40% trees and when colonist came in the 18th and 19th century they went to the coast to cut trees down. This could be considered a negative because trees help with oxygen for people and give animals food and shelter.
