Nazi's had taken over Germany. The leader of Italy decided to align with the Nazi state by signing a treaty of friendship in October 1936. In May 1939, Italy signed the Pact of Steel with Nazi Germany, only a few months before Germany invaded Poland and began WWII. Anna's father stayed informed to news  from London on his short-wave radio, because the local Italian radio stations only broadcast fascist propaganda . Enzo, Anna's older brother, decided to join the front lines and joined the war. Anna's father planned to flee the country with his family and live in the mountain village of Alvito. After they arrived to the village, Anna's oldest brother joined them in the village. Her brother had left his job in the hospital because German soldiers came to ask the administrators for doctors whose last names were Jewish. The last name "Bondi," is mostly identified as Jewish. During this moment of her life, she had to keep her Judaism a secret for safety. She went to church regularly with friends she met in the village. When they got back to their apartment, they learned that the German soldiers were there looking for them because they had got their names from the jobs. Lucky, they escaped before they came. Years later, Anna married an American serviceman. She realized that she was naïve during the holocausts, not knowing about what was really happening.
