Children nowadays prefer to use tablets more than reading books. Experts see that tablets are more interactive than actual books and somehow, tablets can cause distractions to them. Actual books themselves are sometimes not interesting for them because books can only attract child's attention with their interesting pictures or stories, and writers are not doing that. Children are also not being usual with parents reading books before they sleep. Parents should be role models to their kids but they're the ones who are using tablets and not building reading habits for their children.

Natasya Emanuella 16118046
Filia Natania 16118050
Mercyana Abigail 16118108
Jessica Laurelia 16118060
Rahmidevi Alfiani 16118054
Zalfa Humaira 16118072

Reading in children can be improved by usimg technology. However, technology was originally taught as a bad influence because statistics showed that less children are reading. Reading in children can be increased as long as parents encourage their own children using the technology they provided. One of the way to encourage more reading in children is to make reading a social experience. Social experiences such as reading together with parents can improve children's enjoyment of reading. So, how children read is more affected by how they are introduced to reading and less about the technology interfering.

Benedictus Dewantara Yoga / 16118076
Anthea Jessica Himawan Hardosubroto / 16118078
Carola Giovanni Danira Mayorga / 16118090
Bella Valeria / 16118092
Cynthia Gunawan / 16118100
Cherolyn Ajipratiwi Putri / 16118110

The popularity of tablets among children is a controversial topic, as some people believe that tablets provide too many distractions from longer-form reading by creating short attention spans on children. But, it is hard to define what reading means nowadays, since many activities done by children on those screens actually require reading text. Researches has been done which show that digital reading could either be worse for the development of reading skills or better because it offers a new opportunity to keep reading relevant in this era of technology. They also indicate that children's reading ability may be linked to their home environment. Many parents let their children use tablets on a limited screentime as a distraction they get other things done—this, however, leads to a new problem that cause children to prefer exciting apps like games, and not interactive books, whenever they get that restricted time to use tablets. Co-reading between parents and their children, however, could be the key to solve this issue as it has been proved that children are more likely to read more when their parents have the same habit.

Ariena Noer Cahyanti (16118074)
Davita Fauziyyah Widodo (16118094)
Dinda Nabila Aini (16118042)
Khairunnisa Puspawardhani (16118106)
Devi Permatasari (16118062)
Videla Zannuba Arifah (16118098)

The development of handheld devices unfortunately brought about the decline of children's literacy, as more and more of them prefer playing with their tablets and phones over reading a book. Additionally, the social interaction that can result from discussing over physical books cannot be recreated as effectively through online media. Thus, a cleverer way is needed to represent paper-based books through emphasis of quality. But on the other hand, children are actually reading on their devices all the time, though not in the traditional sense. Studies suggesting digital reading being worse for recall and comprehension, usually involve adults who are familiar with books, not children, who have been accustomed to tablets. In fact, children’s preference toward tablets or reading largely depend on how much access to either media their parents grant them, making it important that parents act wisely.

SOEKMANISH
Daisy Ramadhani
Sonia Marcheline
Feren Rukmansa
Melda Oktavia Tambunan
Vergio Victorio E.

Children's reading habit is actually on the rise in some country even though technology usage (tablets and smartphones in particular) is also increasing. Studies about the effect of digital reading are done on older cohort, fewer sample, and don't discuss about the effect on co-reading in parents and children. Digital reading also has a lot of opportunity that can't be ignored even though it does have drawbacks, such as distraction to reading like games. The education system creates a paradigm in children's mind that reading is a burden and not an enjoyable activity. Also, tablets are often misused by busy parents as a modern pacifier instead of a device to encourage reading at young age and doing activity together.

Who to blame for the falling reading rates among children?

As the time goes by, children's use of tablets has been increasing along with their falling reading rates. As we know reading is a good habit that should be started by building interest. While many books have been digitalized with added features to make it more attractive, children are likely to prefer the entertainment aspect more than the literal aspect of them. In some cases it's almost like the tablets play the role as modern babysitter to keep them busy without supervision and communication to other people, thus the advantage of reading is not achieved. When dealing with technology what we should focus on is the people, or on this case the parent. Report found that children are most likely follow what their parents do, so if we want our children to cultivate interest for reading, parents should set the example themselves.

#SmackQueen #MisQueen

1. This VR helped us to see and know things we've never seen before. However, in our opinion, this VR doesn't really differ from any other video, because it doesn't make us feel the reality (galaxy). It only gives us different point of views. The unique thing we found is that we can see in 360° because of gyroscope inside the phone. Through this VR technology, we believe that technology will always improve and benefit humankind.

The VR video we picked falls in the category of “haunted”, precisely, titled The Haunted Castle. There are several reasons as to why we chose this particular video. First, we wanted to watch something different than the popular ones, such as those revolving around sharks, the ocean, or the wildlife. The thumbnail of this video is also interesting enough to beckon us into clicking it. What we like most about watching the video is that we got to experience that irreplaceable rush of adrenaline by being situated in a haunted setting, without having to actually be there in person. There are a few ghosts that appeared, mostly shadows lurking in the corner of our peripheral vision, subtle enough to be noticed, but not too much as to give the viewer a cardiac arrest. However, we did find this video quite lacking; we didn't feel as thrilled as we thought we would be. The atmosphere wasn't scary enough, the ghosts rarely appeared, and even when they did, they were just there. No scare or anything, so it lessened the fear factor greatly. If there is one thing we learned from this video, though, is not to mess with abandoned buildings.

Ariena Noer Cahyanti (16118074)
Davita Fauziyyah Widodo (16118094)
Devi Permatasari (16118062)
Dinda Nabila Aini (16118042)
Khairunnisa Puspawardhani (16118106)
Videla Zannuba Arifah (16118098)

https://youtu.be/nbq3R2xzNUk

Space exploration is interesting and this video allows us to experience high altitude. It took us on a journey from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space. It gives some fun facts about the altitude while the balloon is ascending. Unlike ISS space livestream, in this video we can choose where to look. The video uses 360 camera that is attached to a weather balloon.
Mako Madness VR

Mako Madness broadcasts a 360-degree view of the sharks under the ocean. As a biologist, it is interesting to observe marine life, especially on how sharks behave. The video provides a closeup view of the sharks. One part of the video shows the shark's jagged teeth as it opens its jaws and almost gobbles the camera. The panoramic view allows us to engage with the video in a more immersive way, giving the feel of being present in the actual scene. However, we have to manually turn around in real life to see the scene in all the angles. A few other downsides include the blurry images and poor audio quality. VR technology has been widely used for research, education and entertainment, but we can develop it even further to bring out the best benefits for people. The existence of VR indicates that technology is continuously advancing and becomes even more sophisticated.

Feren Rukmansa
Sonia Marcheline Herman
Daisy Ramadhani M.
Melda Oktavia Tambunan
Vergio V. We liked the sensation of driving on sand dunes that feels like real. The whole part of the video is interesting as well. The unique part of it was the views of Abu Dhabi made us astonished. At first, we were counfused by the Jeeps that move in circle so we didn't know where to focus on. Through this video we found that there are a lot of attractions in United Arab Emirates not only in Dubai. We want to know about Abu Dhabian's way of living and their hospitality. We learned that even in barren and empty desert, they can take the advantage to make it as a tourist attraction and with our country's diverse lanscape we can do better.

#SmackQueen #MisQueen
Elly Kusumawati (16118004)
Muh.

We chose a video titled "Ghost Asylum" to watch with the VR because we feel that this is a chance to experience horror documentaries better by immersing ourselves using a 360 degress view. Moreover, we can experience what it is like to be a part of a paranormal investigation. This video is very well made in the aspects of how realistic it seems, supported by the location, atmosphere, editing, and diologues, to seem like a real investigation situation. The video tells the story about a facility called Pennhurst State School and Hospital which was used to torture fisabled children. Inside the video, there are several written explanations about the history of what is now Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House. However, the explanations are placed at different places, making it difficult to read all of them and even makes us dizzy. As the video progresses, we grow more and more curious about the ghosts in the castle. This growth of curiosity is led by how the video itself was made. Divided into threee parts, the video started by explaining the outer part of the castle, then the rooms and interior of the caste, and finally the video took us on a tour to see the ghosts haunting the castle. Two ghosts were shown in this video, a twelve year old girl called Mary, and a seven feet tall man called Mr. King. The video showed that whatever happens in the past will have a long-term impact.

Benedictus Dewantara Yoga 16118076
Anthea Jessica H.
