was a Polish poet, playwright and author. His works belong to the canon of Polish literature. Many of Fredro's plays were published and popularized only after his death. His best-known works have been translated into English, French, German, Russian, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian and Slovak. He wrote social comedies about the lifestyle of the Polish nobility. 

Two of Fredro's fables, The Monkey in the Bath (Małpa w kąpieli) and Paul and Gawel (Paweł i Gaweł), belong to the most popular children's stories in the country. His best-known comedy, Zemsta (The Revenge), was adapted for the screen in Poland by a film director Andrzej Wajda in 2002. 

Paweł upstairs and Gaweł downstair; 

Paweł, calm, did not disturb anyone, 

Gaweł invented the wildest frolics. 

He was still hunting around his room: 

It's a dog, it's a hare - between tables and stools. 

He chased, ran away, gamboled, 

He shot and honked and screamed to the point of tiredness. 

Paweł endured it, finally he cannot; 

He goes down to Gaweł and asks humbly: 

- Have mercy, sir, hunt more quietly, 

Because my windows are falling. 

And Gaweł replied: - A man's house in his castle. 

What could he say? Paul did not even squeal. 

He returned to himself and put the cap on. 

The next day, Gaweł is still snoring well, 

And here something is dripping from the ceiling on his nose.

He jumped out of the bed and rushes upstairs. 

Knock! Knock! - closed. He looks through the hole 

And he sees… what's up? All the room in the water

And Paweł is sitting on the chest of drawers with a fishing rod. 

- What are you doing, sir? - I catch fish. 

- But, sir, it's dripping on my head! 

And Paweł replied: - A man's house in his castle.

When she could pretend to be a man, 

Seeing a lady once in a bath, 

She climbed under the table - she waits quietly. 

The lady left, closed the door; 

The monkey prankster - get to work! 

Taking the lady's morning cap, 

The sheet 

And the mirror -

Splash! To the bath. 

Continue to turn the taps merrily: 

Left, right, 

Down, up, 

Until the water came out of the pipe. 

Warm - nice - heaven - paradise! 

The monkey thinks: "So cool!" 

Whoopee! - flips, ducks, turns, 

Pranks, mischief, 

Until there is water beneath it! 

But warm something too much ... 

A little too much ... 

Oh, it's hot! ... 

The epigram! - The monkey is not a calf, 

She can handle it:

Where did the boiling water come from? 

The monkey will put her finger there. 

"Oh! Gosh! It burns!" 

Don't wait,

You have to run away! 

Run for it!

The boiling water behind her, 

All the way to the doorsills. 

It's not a joke - it burns the feet ... 

Jump out the window ... - Clink! Fled! 

That only her fingers burned, 

Very happy. -
