A massive majority of people voted in
favour of a return to Germany. In the same year Hitler began to greatly increase the size of his army.

2. Student B - Occupation of Rhineland, 1936

In March, 25,000 German soldiers occupied the Rhineland. They faced no resistance! The League of Nations had shown itself to be weak.

3. Student C - Took over Austria, 1938

Hitler directed Austrian Nazis to engage in large scale riots. A plebiscite is called to decide the question of union with Germany. With German troops at the border, the vote is cancelled. On 12 March the German army enters Austria via invitation.

The Sudetenland was handed over to Germany by

Chamberlain, Daladier and Mussolini. Germany agreed

not to take over the rest of Czechoslovakia. France had

broken the Franco-Soviet Pact. Chamberlain declared, 'peace

for our time'.

5. Student B - Occupation of Czechoslovakia, 1939

In March, Czech President, Emil Hacha, went to Germany to ask

Hitler to stop interfering in Czech affairs. Hitler reacted by

threatening to bomb Prague unless he placed control in

the hands of the Nazis. Fearing a massacre, Hacha agreed.

6. Student C - Nazi - Soviet Pact, 1939

In August, Germany and Russia signed a ten
year non-aggression pact. They also agreed to partition Poland. Gave both countries desperately needed breathing space.

7. Student A - Invasion of Poland, 1939

Hitler wanted Danzig to be returned to Germany. He also wanted access to the Polish Corridor. Britain and France threatened war if Poland were attacked. In May, Hitler signed the 'Pact of Steel' with Mussolini. On Sep. 3 Hitler invaded Poland. Britain and France declared war.
