I feel like Mariam's life in prison would be way better because all the other inmates treated her with respect and thought she was so cool for sticking up for herself, especially as a woman. Life in prison would make her feel way more comfortable and free compared to living at home with Rasheed because she wouldn't be abused or insulted, or forced to cook and clean.

I feel like if Tariq and Laila actually got married, she would have never been hurt or degraded. She would have only known love and patience. Their life would be centered in caring for eachother, even when the Taliban arrived, I feel like he would do anything to protect her. Life would be scary and dangerous, but in between they would find ways to protect each other and have more babies together.

It's hard to assume what background someone must endure to be the type of person Rasheed became. But, I can only guess that Rasheed may have had dominate male roles in his life but perhaps he was not included as one of them. Maybe he had an older brother who was seen as the next man of the house and always aspired to be that person. He probably wanted a son so that he could ensure to train him or teach him how to be the dominante male figure he always wanted to be.

Growing up, Rasheed was neglected, bullied, and abused by his family and friends. His mom, who was much younger than his dad, was forced to marry his dad. Her situation was very similar to that of Mariam's in regard to marriage being the better solution to her current situation. Once she had Rasheed, she hated his image as he closely resembled his father's portrait. His father was far worse in terms of abuse, and rather than protecting Rasheed, she took her anger out on him. This explains his negative attitude toward women.
