But, I can only guess that Rasheed may have had dominate male roles in his life but perhaps he was not included as one of them. Maybe he had an older brother who was seen as the next man of the house and always aspired to be that person. His mom, who was much younger than his dad, was forced to marry his dad. Her situation was very similar to that of Mariam's in regard to marriage being the better solution to her current situation. Once she had Rasheed, she hated his image as he closely resembled his father's portrait. His father was far worse in terms of abuse, and rather than protecting Rasheed, she took her anger out on him.
