The octonauts explores life below water with nautical themed locations, terms, and characters!

The octonauts befriend a fish and do everything in their power to make it smile. Although the frown fish is nothing like them (and even speaks a different language!), they share all of their strengths and favorite activities with the frown fish to make them smile!

Activity: After talking about it, have the students walk around the track for a similar distance as their commutes. Compare their own commute to school to what they think other kids in different countries commute is.

Discussion with the kids:

• Read the school lunch menu and think about where the school gets their food

• Where does your family get their food?

• Where do foods come from? (the grocery, the garden, etc.) Which out of the options is the most responsible/sustainable way to get your vegetables, and why? (have the kids choose)

During:

• Read aloud. Focus #1: why are we growing vegetables instead of flowers?

• Focus #2: vegetables > flowers (mom's lesson)

• Unscramble the story book (make sure they can recognize the order of the story, check for reading comprehension)

After:

• Everyone choose their favorite dish and have them go backward and see the process of how that dish was made (garden to plate).

Talking about what students would do if something similar happened to our school as to what happened in the book (a natural disaster, etc).

Then, ask the students what types of things (trash) are bad for the ocean, and have them list some ideas.

2) Students will go on a field trip to a recycling facility.

Each group of 4 tries to pick up as much trash as they can around the school in 10 minutes.

Whoever picks up the most trash wins.

Use the trash to make an art project garbage monster (reuse).

Present out garbage monster.

Sing a song about recycling, cleaning up, etc.

Introduce some art made of recycled materials, maybe recycled shoes, artists that use recycled materials, etc.

Have the students think of some materials they could recycle into art, and how.

Tying book/care closet project into discussion about food pantries with students.

• Showing examples of food bank resources

• Comparing/contrasting food banks in places around the world

• Discussing how to get involved in food banks or similar resources

• What can you/can you not donate to a food bank?

• Discussing shame in relation to utilizing food bank resources

Aiming to have the students understand the existential threats that affect a particular ecosystem, and what they can do to do (as students) to alleviate these problems.

Potential lesson plan:

• funny video on squirrels

• nut cracking contest to better relate to squirrels

• read (some of) the book

• have the students pick a favorite squirrel and find facts about their ecosystem

• have the students find potential threats to the particular squirrel ecosystem (building infrastructure, food, water, deforestation, etc.)

• compare and contrast different squirrel ecosystems as a class discussion. draw ideal vs actual squirrel ecosystem

• have groups of students brainstorm ways to preserve their particular squirrel ecosystem/environment

• have the students read SDG 15 and connect the goals of the SDG to their class activities

During we read the book, we could separate the pics and use easier way to explain the words

E.g. Some people ride scooters, some people ride cars.

Let students draw corresponding posters. The students then go around the classroom, writing their names on posters that apply to their experiences.

Read the story, emphasize key words, simplify when needed

Ask students to create solutions (using Chinese as necessary) for themselves, the school, governments, companies, whatever they come up with.

Activity:

Elementary: kid can draw a picture , and others can guess what the shop is and what we can get in the shop.

Junior: students can group and talk their ideas about how to make the old clothes new life, if they can, we can let students bring their old clothes and think how to make a new life.

Introduce thrifting and donating clothes.

Ask questions: What is water? What do we use it for? At school? At home? Do you need water? How important is water in your daily life? Show pictures of polluted water and ask: Would you drink this? Bathe in this?

SDG 10 Reduced inequalities

Ask questions: What is inequality? Is there inequality in Taiwan? Where do you see inequality? How do you feel about inequality?

What benefits could education offer you? What jobs are open to you based on the level of education you have?

Maybe similar to the shopping for groceries, students could be given different budgets and try to buy school supplies from the market in-class or use the internet to look at 9x9's website. Maybe a step further, we could put in the explanation why the students have this budget. For example, "You are a high school graduate so you have X job. You are buying supplies which can be x% of your monthly income. You have 400NTD to buy supplies for math, English, science, and art class."
