The history of the Republic can be divided into four stages: Pre-Hispanic Stage, Hispanic Stage (Conquest, Colonization and Colony), Independence and Republic.
The beginning of Ecuador's history is based on pre-Hispanic organizations that end with the Incaic Invasion.

The feast of Black Mum is celebrated twice each year in Latacunga.
This feast honors the virgin of La Merced who is the patron saint of the eruption of the Cotopaxi volcano (Feast of Black Mama). Ecuador's literature is characterized by its costumbrism and reflects “the life of the ordinary citizen” (Culture of Ecuador). Jorge Icaza, Maria Fernanda Espinosa and Pablo Palacio are the best known writers of Ecuador.
