1. TEACHER READINESS: subject mastery, familiarity with approach, rapport with students, etc. - is the teacher able and willing to carry out this approach in class?

2. TIME: minimum amount of lesson time required for SAC (or any discussion-based approach) - does the work schedule allow for this?

3. STUDENT PREPAREDNESS: participants need to have completed pre-assigned readings in order for meaningful discussion to take place - 1) have students done their prep work, and 2) do they understand what they've read?

4. STUDENT ABILITY LEVEL: quality of group discussion and degree of participation is dependent on student ability; a wide range of ability levels will make engagement challenging - is there sufficient differentiation of the class to ensure that students in each group are of similar ability?

5. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT (related to 1, 3 and 4): student discussions must be monitored to ensure on-task behaviour - ability of teacher to do this dependent on experience and skill (having a co-teacher helps), as well as rapport with class and student ability - how well is the lesson activity monitored and managed?
