I also used materials that I didn't really intend to (I used oil pastel and color pencil when I really wanted to use chalk for gradation) and that was another mistake I made. If I were to redo this piece I would go with a completely different idea and fix the usage of materials. Thus I wasn't pleased with my work. I originally wanted to use colored pencil and watercolor, but I ended up using only watercolor, and the layout and look of the piece was originally different in my mind, as was the final product. I feel as though I needed more time for this, as I have never been good at perspective ESPECIALLY with buildings and architecture. I ended up also chopping off nearly half the piece, which was another thing I did that I wasn't entirely pleased with. My idea and how this piece connects to growth was to show a more 'ancient' building in the forefront, while showing a more developed civilization in the background (ironically the picture was taken in Ohio (to my remembrance) and not in Japan or where you would expect upon looking at the original photograph) to show the growth of civilization and how we've evolved our architecture to actually be less complex than it once was, and exponentially more boring in design.
