Phillip lived in Virginia with his mother and farther until his mother wanted to take him to Curacao. When he went with his mother on a boat, a torpedo hit the boat and they were separated. When Phillip woke up he saw that he was on a safety boat with a negro man he didn't know. From there on out, he knew things would be different.

After Phillip was found, things for him changed from being at The Cay. It says on page 136, "In early April, I returned to Willemstad with my mother, and we took up life where it had been left off the previous April." Even though Phillip was happy to get off the island, he wants to go back and visit Timothy's grave.

In the book Phillip told Timothy that his mom didn't like black people, so he was a little worried about Tim. Timothy answered with, I do like some white people, but I can't not like all of them. At the end of the book, he kind of stops hanging out with Henrik and starts hanging out with the black people in his town. He hangs out with them because he likes how they speak, and what they talk about.
