Teaching and learning through an integrated approach can be implemented to help children make meaningful connections between different learning contexts. This type of outdoor activity – Theme Street Interview – has been carried out in public areas on a monthly basis. For example, advanced learners can ask open-ended questions, intermediate learners can use close-ended questions that require simple and short answers, and visual prompts such as pictures can assist emerging learners. Through this practice, the children not only enhance their language and literacy skills but also boost their confidence levels.

This activity is designed for the 4 year olds for them to know the letters in their name and for them to eventually spell their name with minimal guidance.

First Activity: Practise writing their name using the template provide.

Second Activity: Use the blank papers provided to write their names on.

Third Activity: Pick out the pictures that has the same beginning letter to their name and draw the pictures on the papers provided.

Learning About Shapes

This activity was prepared for the K1 children in Term 1.

Level 1: Children form basic shapes on the grids with/without assistance of the templates provided.

Level 2: Children are challenged to make different forms using the template provided as guidance.

Level 3: Children are further challenged to interpret real-life objects in simple shapes.

Our centres cater to children of differing backgrounds and abilities. Our classroom has to be inclusive so we can support every child to learn at their own pace.

2 things I’ll share with my colleagues:

Creating a learning corner schedule and giving the medium-low ability more time at the corners instead of a fixed rigid schedule.
Having a class interest board for the students to share what they’re interested in so that school becomes more fun and engaging.

1 thing I’ll apply in my class:

Having the class interest board, as I’m currently teaching the K2s, letting them put down their interests could help me tweak my lessons and give me more ideas as well.

(Let’s Rethink)

I like how the Curriculum Meeting is not a one-way communication from the management to teacher, the Curriculum Meeting gives teachers time to brainstorm learning centre activities together. Additionally, I liked how the teachers are grouped together based on their teaching level to support each other during the brainstorming session.
The classroom environment is rich with prints like sight words/ high frequency words.

I would like to try out the “Interest Board” with my N2 children to better understand children’s interests.

I would like to make use of the empty walls in the centre to put up more photos of the children’s learning. The Class Interest Board is another idea that I want to introduce to my teachers.

We would like to incorporate the ‘Interest Board’ in our centre for our June Holiday Programme.
We would also like to implement the ‘Differentiated Learning’ into our learning corners actively.
An idea to get our early years teachers to chip in with ideas on our learning corners materials as most of our teachers are beginning teachers and require more more guidance carrying this out
