Why I, as a black man, attend KKK rallies

The speaker in this TED Talk really emphasizes the idea of respect and listening to other people's views. In today's society too many people refuse to see certain issues from both sides. They automatically think their view is correct and wont listen to or respect any other viewpoints. This idea can be connected to today's politics. Politicians feel there is only one right answer to a given question and are not often willing to hear other possible answers to the question. The speaker shows that through listening and respecting progress is made.

The Power of a Single Story

The speaker in this TED Talk discusses stories and stereotypes in society. One story about a certain place or thing can really change the way a person feels about that particular thing. If you hear one story about something or someone you will form opinions on that thing or person subconsciously. It is important to try not to form these opinions because there will always be so many other stories about that specific person or thing. You should always get the full story before forming an opinion. This includes both sides of the story which connects back to the other TED Talk regarding the black man who attends KKK rallies. Once you have all the facts and hear all the stories you can form a valid opinion that you can stand by

What is White Privilege, Really?

I understand the idea of white privilege and I definitely acknowledge that it is a real problem in the world today, especially in the US. Because of the color of your skin it can be much easier or much harder to do certain things. While keeping that in mind I must say sometimes people use white privilege as an excuse for things so the phrase doesn't have as much weight behind it as it could. I don't think the “white food” example works for white privilege. Stores will put the things on their shelves that get bought most frequently. If this means the food most prominently displayed is “white food” how is this an example of white privilege.

There is a very long history behind blackface in America. Looking back in history it was used as a tool to make fun of African Americans for their skin color. Today it amazes me that someone doesn't understand this history and realize how bad blackface is. Not only that but to go on national TV to defend it is an absolute embarrassment. In the 21st century some people, unfortunately, are just as ignorant as people were back in the 19th and 20th centuries when it comes to slavery

This poem can be directly connected to Their Eyes Were Watching God. In the book Nanny claims that black women are the mule of the world. They are always doing hard work for other people yet they never get the credit for it. In the poem the character being described appears to be like the “mule”, doing all the hard work and being punished. This idea is extremely racist and also sexist. It shows readers how unfair the world was and in some places still is for certain people.

Pay Gap Starts Early

The author of this article expresses how bad the pay gap is in Canada. In 2014 women made only 75.3 cents for every dollar made by a male. I struggle to agree with most articles about the wage gap. The articles usually fail to bring up both sides of the argument and feel very opinionated. This article however does address the argument that some of this pay gap comes from other sources besides discrimination. It says that 10 - 15 cents of the wage gap comes from discrimination which means that women in Canada make about 85 - 90 cents per dollar that a man makes only because of their gender. Although it is still wrong that women make less than men, I feel like the article should not try to make the issue seem worse than it is. The article also claims that some of the pay gap comes from the women not negotiating their salary due to fear about how they will perceived. From this information I do not think it is fair to place all the blame on the men, I think women need to take some responsibility for not trying to negotiate.

Men tackle gender inequality

This article discusses how equality between the two genders can not be solved with new laws but also with changed attitudes. A new law does not work unless people follow it. This is why organizations around the world go out to help people understand why the laws are important. Once people begin to view women and men as equal then new laws can be made to help protect it. The laws can only be used as protection and the real change must come within the individuals. Once individuals become aware of the problems in the world then the world will begin to see changes for the better. It is now the job of everyone, males and females, to help society to be put into the right mindset.

Gender inequality in the workplace is not just a women’s issue

This article talks about how inequality in the workplace is not an issue that only women can solve. The issue is something that both sides, male and female, need to work on. I agree with this statement a lot. I feel like everytime a man is accused of sexual assault in today's world a lot of men will get defensive and feel like they are personally being attacked. On the other hand some women are attacking the male gender as a whole and sometimes it feels like they are saying all men are bad or that all men are capable of doing this horrible thing. Men have to understand that they are not all getting attacked. Women accusing men of sexual assault are simply calling out specific men who have done bad things. Women have to acknowledge the fact that not all men are bad. Once this happens big progress will be made in the workplace.

Gender pay gap will take over 200 years to close: World Economic Forum

This article was published very recently and talks about how bad the wage gap is in the United States and how it probably won't be equal for another 200 or so years. I feel like this estimate is false though. You can connect this article to the other sources in this category. If everyone can work together to make change I feel like big progress can be made. If this happens the 200 year prediction will quickly go down. I feel there is even potential to have equality by 2020 if someone really takes the initiative to try and make it happen.

Gender Inequality and Women in the Workplace

This source is from Harvard University so I feel like it can be trusted. The article talks about the pay gap and how its affects everyone in the workplace in America. The article discusses how the pay gap has nothing to do with education which I agree with. In today's world women and men have equal opportunities in education and men and women have opportunities to enter any field of work. This article says that the problem rises when women have to go home after their job to take care of the family and housework. Hypocritical, however, later in the article it says that trying to stop stereotyping will also help a lot. I think that saying women go home to work “second jobs” taking care of the house and family is very stereotypical however. Men can easily do family and house work just as easily as women can. I feel like this hypocrisy makes the article lose a lot of its weight that it could have.
