Ultrasonic measurement provides a precise method of determining bolt tension after preload. An ultrasonic signal is sent down one end of the fastener and the time it takes to return to the transducer is measured. Based on the time of flight of this ultrasonic signal, the bolt elongation can be determined using a reference measurement (unloaded fastener length). The delta, or change in length of the bolt before and after preload paired with the bolt geometry, can be used to accurately calculate the amount of tension within the installed bolt. Ultrasonic measurements can be used to validate torque applications and reduce preload scatter by up 20%. Unlike deflection validation, ultrasonic measurements can be used in applications with blind holes as the transducer used only needs access to one end of the fastener. Additionally, if the unloaded length of the fasteners used in known prior to the initial preload, ultrasonic measurements can be used to measure residual preloads after application loading and ensure bolts are still within specification.

The units work with most bolt tightening systems and are used to monitor the fastener during the tightening process to ensure accurate initial loading. The retained load in the fastener can then be monitored at any time.
