Our national strength is dangerously dependent on a thin line of oil tankers stretching half-way around the Earth, originating in the Middle East and around the Persian Gulf, one of the most unstable regions in the world."
"There is no single answer. We must produce more. We must conserve more. And now we must join together in a great national effort to use American technology to give us energy security in the years ahead."

We believed that our nation’s resources were limitless until 1973 when we had to face a growing dependence on foreign oil."
"Our excessive dependence on OPEC has already taken a tremendous toll on our economy and our people. This is the direct cause of the long lines which have made millions of you spend aggravating hours waiting for gasoline. It's a cause of the increased inflation and unemployment that we now face. This intolerable dependence on foreign oil threatens our economic independence and the very security of our Nation."

The 1970’s energy crisis was a result of America’s dependence on the Middle East. During the Yom Kippur war, America felt secure that OPEC would not cut off their oil supply so they sent military aid to the Israelis. Consequently, Arab OPEC members placed an oil embargo on the U.S., sending the U.S. into a state of crisis full of decreasing oil supply and increasing oil demand. The embargo was eventually lifted in 1974 when an agreement was finally reached, but oil prices were still very high. Throughout the decade, the price of oil skyrocketed in from $3 a gallon to $12, further contributing to the inflation the economy was facing and leading to more unemployment than ever. President Jimmy Carter addressed the situation publicly by creating a cumulative National Energy Plan which suggested utilizing domestic oil sources to reduce foreign dependence, conserving and limiting the use of any remaining oil, and turning to alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power. The ‘70s energy crisis was overall important because it contributed to mass inflation and unemployment in the post-war era, urged the American government to think critically about their energy efficiency, and gave rise to environmentalist views.
