These five words apply to the theme of overcoming is because they all share the same meaning which is "to defeat". For example, the main character, Travis Gardner prevailed over his pain, physically and mentally, before the game and played like there was no pain. He thought to himself and then prepared himself for the game. "Pain didn't matter to me anymore. . . Another loss and I'd be three and three as a high school quarterback, nothing but average" p.227.

This book relates to the key concept of communication through the all of character's actions. When Travis is give performance enhancement drugs from an unknown person, Carter, Travis' older brother, becomes furious towards towards Travis' Coach by physically pushing him towards a wall. Carter says to Coach, "'You! You did it!' Carter screamed,...'You gave these to Travis'!" p.248. Then as Coach acts confused about Carter's actions, Travis communicates to his older brother and says who did it. "'It wasn't him' I cried. "It was Walter Henry (Travis' sports agent)! He gave them to me!'" p.249. This shows that the brothers communicate to reach an understanding.
