Mary Mackillop was born on the 15th of January, 1842, Melbourne Australia. Mary was a serious child whom had a strong love for God and an understanding of what she could do for the people in need. As the eldest child of 7 children, much responsibility fell on her, especially after the loss of alexander, dying at only 11 months old. Marys father, Alexander Mackillop, had a firm faith, always keeping them grounded whereas Marys mother, Flora Mackillop (Flora McDonald) had a strong love for god always helping them though the hard life they all had.

At the age of 16, Mary and her brother John had to support their mother and their younger siblings. During the first two years of working as a clerk at ‘Sands and Kenny Stationers’. Feeling the responsibility and hardship of working Mary wrote, “when I was sixteen years of age the principle of care of a very large family fell upon me, and from that time until I was 25 I felt its burden yearly more and more.”. as she turned at, Mary moved to the town of Penola in South Australia to work as a Governess, this is where she met Father Woods. In her own time, Mary became aware to what she could to for the children living in poverty. Father Woods inspired her to do what she believed and to follow the way of God in helping others.

24 November 1867 - Adelaide
J.M.J.

"My dearest Mamma,

You are punishing me for my long delay in answering your last letter, but if you are well and your mind happy, I have cause to be thankful indeed. I never have cause to be anything else.

My Father Director has given me permission to write once a month to you – ‘tis now five weeks since I last wrote, and if my poor letters can give you any comfort, you shall, please God, have them regularly in future. My love and feeling for you have not cooled. I remember all the past but cannot grieve, nor can I when I think of your present lonely position, for at the same time I think of our dear, good and merciful God who has so honoured you and me, and it seems to me but a very poor offering I have to make Him when I lay your loneliness and sorrow before Him and beg of Him to accept my poor heart in spite of its unworthiness, and to be Himself your sweet and only Comforter.

Oh Mamma, if you but knew what the Sisters of St Joseph ought to be, and can be, too, if they but correspond with the graces they receive, you would rejoice more and more every day that you have one child amongst them and you would try to send another too. Now I suppose you will shake your head at this, but never mind, I am sure you won’t resist God’s Holy Will, and when the proper time comes, I hope dear Lexie will come too, but it will be sooner than you think, at least I hope so.

Did Peter like his letter? The poor child must have thought I had forgotten him. I cannot write more, for ‘tis time to go to bed – and I have not permission to sit up. You know I have to obey our holy Rule to the letter. Pray, my own dear Mamma, that I may have the grace to do so.

Monday morning – Father Woods is going to the North today and will see Donald. The poor boy will also think I am neglecting him – but when I know he is well, I do other things instead of writing to him. Give John my love when you write, and please tell him that, though I am a poor Nun at last, he may write to me.

Fond love to yourself and pray, dear Mamma for
Your affectionate child in J.M.J.
Mary of the Cross – Sister of St Joseph

Please write to me, and give Papa my love – ask him to write too."

Reprinted with permission from Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart

The First social encyclical, issued at the time of great change in Europe focused on 3 main points to acknowledge the conditions of labour. First, the balance between labour and Capital, second, the common good and finally the role of the state. As well as touching on what is known as the ‘preferred option for the poor’, Pope Leo’s message of the Rerum Novarum is that everyone has the right to full pay, conditions to protect the workers, supporting families/individuals to develop and to rise above poverty.
Rerum Novarum, is relevant to the actions of Mary Mackillop because she believed in helping others and doing what she could to benefit people no matter what it took her. Pope Leo XIII wrote this encyclical to acknowledge the conditions of labour, while doing this he also touched on the Common good of all people, making it clear that they need to balance their rights against the idea of the common good (#34). Mary Mackillop did what she could to help the poor and marginalised, Pope Leo wrote what the churches desire for the poor was; saying they “should rise above poverty and wretched ness and better their condition in life…”. Finally, wanting the wellbeing of all (the role of state) is something Mary Mackillop fought and achieved throughout her life.

Priestly: Priestly works of Jesus is when a Christian keeps prayer and worship at the heart of their lives. Mary Mackillop was surround by prayer and religion from a very young age, her mother and father where a strong role model of prayerful, daily life. As a strict child, Mary kept a strong faith and love for God and desired to do what she could for people in need. Having a strong desire for religious life as well as doing what she could for the poor of Penola, resulted in the formation of the Sisters of St Joseph
Prophetic: When a Christian participates in the Kingly work of Jesus is when you speak out against injustice, to act with dignity and mutual respect to all. Mary Mackillop demonstrated the Prophetic act though her work in the education of disadvantaged children. Opening schools to everyone, those with or without money, Mary treated all the children with equal respect and resources. When the Governors son was enrolled, it was wanted the boy got special consideration due to the money and power of the family, no special treatment was given because Mary believe everyone was the same.
Kingly: The Kingly work of Jesus is a Christian uses whatever power and influence they have for an opportunity to do what's right. Mary Mackillop was shown to demonstrate the Kingly work of Jesus, when father woods was notified by the sisters that a priest was abusing children in this area. The result of this caused the priest to be dismissed from South Australia therefore leading into complications for the sisters because many priests wanted to "destroy" the sisters, father woods being sent away and finally Mary being excommunicated from the church.

Mary Mackillop has influenced many people and groups to continue her work on the education and help of children, particularly Mother Theresa. At the age of twelve, Mother Theresa felt a strong call towards God and knew that she needed to spread the love of christ. Mother Theresa devoted her life to helping the poor and those in need, particularly the homeless, lepers and those in the slums of India. Like mary she founded the missionaries of charity, devoted to helping the sick and the poor, from here she became a worldwide symbol of charity. Over time, the Missionaries of Charity has spread throughout the world, providing care for the poor in countries like Asia and Africa. With her love of children and God, Mother Theresa made a difference in the world, just as Mary Mackillop did.
