It is very interesting to see that the people, who we have just met, have now been labelled as survivors. Over 100,000 people instantly dead and these six people we seem to have already a close relationship to. Reading the descriptions of the victims is very sad. I'm sure that those who experienced it knew that it was a new type of weapon, but there had to have been a level of shock before they started thinking about what weapons were used. I think that the book goes into good detail about the survivors banding together and slowly getting information about what happened, while they are still helping people. He doesn't understand triage, and the doctor explains that the heavily wounded are going to die anyway. I put myself in that situation, not being able to find my family in that scenario would be very scary. I think that we always get a distorted view of what happened, and we never hear what they actual people who were there have to say. It is good on the part of John Hershey to point this out, and put it on full display. It adds an interesting aspect to the story and makes it unique. A nightingale is also a very interesting creature to choose to be the main focus of the story. The girl again rejects him however, and this is a great lesson that the story conveys very well. Material goods to impress others will get you nowhere. Relying on good character and positive personal traits is better than material wealth. This is what the story is teaching us, when she rejects him for better material goods.
