Only then, forced at six months to confront his destiny, does he begin to cry" (Lahiri 40). https://padlet.com/jhunt36/q3hj6jjtgipy/wish/224759532 When Gogol is prompted to choose between soil, a pen, and a dollar as part of a Bengali custom of predicting his future career, Gogol refuses to pick anything. It's safe to assume he is just a toddler and this didn't literally mean anything, but it symbolically represents Gogol differing from the customs of his parents. After all, Gogol is a first generation American born of Bengali immigrants.
