This piece illustrates the migration of the native americans to new land. During the early expansion of the United States, the land of the native americans was sought after. However, it was contested. The Early settlers drove the natives off their land in order to expand(PBS Indian removal). We required them to move further and further away from their homes.

The piece shows the tone of the time for the American Indians. It would've been a trying time for their people. During the journey many Indians didn't fair well. Grief for lost ones during the trek, combined with the loss of their land would've made for a sorrowful era for the Natives.

The most critical event during the plight of the Native Americans was the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act was enacted in 1830 and called for the most widespread removal of the American Indians from their land (PBS Indian Removal). It required them to move west of the Mississippi. There were acts that called for specific groups of Natives to move but the Indian Removal Act was by far the most impactful, requiring all Natives to move.
