In the 2010’s, Personalised Content Consumption transformed entertainment, as streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube began to offer tailored access to movies, music, and videos. These platforms utilise algorithms and user data to customise recommendations, removing the necessity for traditional TV, movie theatres, or radio. This shift grants users control over their entertainment experiences, allowing them to choose what, when, and how they consume media.

By increasing accessibility to content, streaming services eliminate barriers, allowing independent artists to reach audiences worldwide, regardless of their financial status. However, this trend also brings up worries about excessive screen time and its effects on mental health, as well as concerns surrounding data privacy.

While Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers numerous benefits and has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of society, there are also concerns and potential drawbacks associated with its development and deployment.

AI systems can inherit biases present in the data used to train them, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes. Biases can occur in areas such as facial recognition, hiring processes, and criminal justice systems, potentially exacerbating existing inequalities and injustices.

Increasing reliance on AI systems may lead to over reliance and reduced human autonomy in decision-making processes. There is a risk of delegating critical tasks to AI without sufficient oversight or human intervention, potentially leading to errors or unforeseen consequences.

Addressing these challenges requires careful consideration of ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks to ensure that AI development and deployment are conducted responsibly and in alignment with societal values and principles. Collaboration between policymakers, technologists, ethicists, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds is essential to mitigate the negative impacts of AI while maximizing its potential benefits for society.

The use of AI can significantly impact mental health and wellbeing in various ways. On the positive side, AI-powered tools like chatbots and virtual therapists offer accessible and immediate support to individuals in need, especially in areas with limited mental health resources. These tools can personalize treatment plans based on individual needs and detect early signs of mental health disorders, enabling timely intervention. Additionally, AI can help reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues by providing anonymity and privacy. However, there are also potential negative impacts to consider. Ethical concerns arise regarding privacy, security, and algorithmic bias. Some individuals may prefer human interaction over AI-driven support, and there's a risk of over reliance on AI, potentially neglecting other forms of treatment. Moreover, AI algorithms may not always accurately diagnose mental health conditions, leading to misinterpretation of symptoms. Therefore, it's crucial to prioritize ethical considerations, integrate AI tools into existing mental health services, and continuously evaluate their effectiveness and impact on individuals' lives.

References:

J Buolamwini, & T Gebru (2018).

Excessive use of smartphones, especially before bedtime, has become increasingly recognised as a significant cause of sleep problems. The blue light emitted by smartphone screens disrupts the production of melatonin, a hormone crucial for regulating our sleep-wake cycles. This disruption not only makes it difficult to fall asleep but also shortens the overall duration of sleep, leading to feelings of restlessness and fatigue the following day.

Smartphones are often used for screen-based activities like social media browsing, playing games or watching videos late into the night, which not only delays our bedtime but also disrupts the winding-down process necessary for a restful sleep. As a result, many people experience insomnia and daytime fatigue, which can have detrimental effects on their mental health, including increased stress, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

While smartphones offer convenience and connectivity, it's important to be aware of their negative impact on our sleep and our overall well-being, and to prioritise strategies for managing screen time and promoting healthy sleep habits to support our mental health.

References:

N Cain, & M Gradisar, (2010).
