Main Idea

Polar bears are carnivores and the Arctic's apex predators.

Supporting Sentence

They also specialize in preying on seals, particularly ringed seals. They typically ambush their prey; polar bears may stalk their prey on the ice or in the water, but they will also stay at breathing holes or ice edges to wait for prey to swim by. Polar bears primarily feed on the energy-rich blubber of seals. Other prey includes walruses, beluga whales, and some land animals.

Main idea

Polar bears have claws and teeth that are perfectly shaped to catch and eat their prey.

Supporting sentence

The polar bear is the largest extant bear species and land carnivore by body mass, with adult males weighing 300–800 kg (660–1,760 lb). The species is sexually dimorphic, with adult females being much smaller. Polar bears have white or yellowish fur with black skin and a thick layer of fat. They are more slender than brown bears, with a narrower skull, longer neck, and lower shoulder hump. Their teeth are sharper and better adapted for cutting meat. Their claws are large and enable them to walk on ice and paddle in water.
