For my activism project I decided to redesign a whitewashed book cover. The book I redesigned was The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa and the main character is described as an Asian while on the cover of the book she is portrayed by a white woman. I think that this is an important issue because when a book has the main character as someone of color and you see someone white, it confuses the reader and also makes it seem like white is better somehow. So I have drawn a cover portraying an Asian woman that is similar to the original cover.

For our activism project, we have decided to do many things. First off, we decided to make a website. It's purpose is to spread awareness and knowledge about the problem of white washing, and our company, the SWW. We used Weebly.com to do this. Next, we made a PSA Announcement video that talks about our company and the ways we will try to spread awareness and ways that we will try to stop the problem. We made that using Powtoon.com. Next we made a proposal document, with our missions statement, cause, and activism work. Last, but not least, we had made a twitter account that uses the hashtag, #stopww to spread awareness about our cause.

Jamie the main character was never specified as being colored or white, so I decided to make the main character colored in my new book cover.

For my Activism Project, I really wanted to focus on White Washing. I really wanted to make my project about this topic because I think that it is a horrible thing to do for books, movies, etc.I also think that this makes people of color ashamed of how they look. I really wanted to spread awareness about this issue and I think that my project did just that. I decided to re-make a book cover that was whitewashed so it can really portray the book. The book that I chose was The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. In the book, she describes the main character as a bit overweight, brown skinned, and a bit awkward, but the book cover didn't seem to show that at all. The book's cover shows a white girl who is very skinny and she clearly seems confident, which was very different from how she described the main character in the book.

For our project, we wanted to focus on whitwashing in magazines. We felt that it was horrible that people didn't look how they usually did in real life. People should be able to feel comfortable in their own skin and not have to have somebody on a magazine that looks like them to feel confident. But, we don't live in a perfect world, and many people need that. Leah made the pictures and some of the cover and Sierra wrote about it and also did some of the cover. We both worked very hard on this because we believe that the anger that we had about this led us to work harder.

We think that this video might influence others to know more about famous Africa-Americans since they aren't really credited. For my project I decided to redesign a book cover. The book is called The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. The main character of the book is an attractive red-eyed Asian girl who is a vampire, but on the cover she is portrayed as an attractive red-eyed white girl instead which is not how the book describes her. In the book it says: “My reflection stared back at me, a dirty-faced girl with straight black hair and ‘squinty eyes,’ as Rat put it.” This is something happening on tons of books that needs to change. People think that if the cover has a white person on it, it would sell better. They are simply saying that other races are not as beautiful and are lower. We try to live not being racist, but we don't see that racism is happening all around us we are just to busy to realize it. We should inform people about what is happening on book covers that we read everyday and spread awareness to others.
