A Reflective Thinker

Online forums open the door for reflective thinking, allowing facilitators and participants to post, reconsider and respond to comments and ideas from others. This reflection time allows us to consider different examples, texts etc which can be used to augment our arguments. For example to illustrate how language choices can influence our reactions I would play a short video on the power of words. Stop the video just before the end and have participants predict what she wrote. The answer is not the most important aspect, but the exercise in language choices is important.

A second need for an online facilitator that I struggle with is being organized, not with the content, but with the multiple personalities and the multiple perspectives that they eschew. I envision a desk with pieces of paper, and copious notes as I try to read and follow all of the discussion threads etc. The key will be deciding what I don't need to include and what must be responded to. Looking at all of the posts on this page gives me a sense of the issue.
John Syvitski

For example, a professional online facilitator can role-model by setting the friendly and supportive tone to inspire and build a community of learners and boost their exchanges, yet clearly demonstrating the sense of responsibility and conscientiousness expected for a high quality and effective learning experience for all participants. The workshop online platform structure with its high quality multi media resources and scaffolded individual and group activities discreetly yet effectively led by our facilitators, burning questions, etc. are actually great examples for that, while the profile section, coffee corner, first learning engagement “Meet and greet” are also great examples for setting the friendly tone and team spirit needed to make all participants confident and inspired learners.

Dorsaf Kouki

As one of my selected competences, I selected creativity. I suppose as an arts educator, the creative process is something I feel attached to. Research has shown that within the creative process the opportunity to fail is paramount. Often, one can learn only after making mistakes. I find that some of the most significant learning happens in an environment where this is possible and feasible. I like this aspect of WSL competencies. Creativity inspires open-mindedness and exploration . I hope to instil such a culture in the online workshops.

IBAN Capability - Self Management Affective Skills:

Diplomatic solutions are central to finding solutions to issues that at times cause anxiety. Being open - minded and trying to seek multiple ends to a goal are also essential in the process. I hope I can find / develop a process where online learners are able to find their own paths in an environment that makes sense to them. This will most probably happen through episodes of frustration. When I reflect on my own students, I find that the students that have gone through some sort of frustrating experience have often ended up with deeper threads of understanding

Jim
