Defining the Problem: How does learning disabilities affect children daily lives?
Children with learning disabilities face many challenges throughout their daily lives. My son and daughter has been diagnosed with SLD(specific learning disorder) I have witnessed firsthand how difficult living with a learning disability can be, not only through my children lives but mine as well.Having a learning disability can impact the way a person“of at least average intelligence receives, stores, and processes information” (NCLD 2001).Interaction with peers, strangers, and teachers can also be difficult for children with learning disabilities(Jerome Rosner- third. In addition, being quick to pick up basic reading, writing, reasoning, recalling instructions, visual cues, sarcasm and material taught is also a challenging task for a child with a learning disability .(Dr. Fox, Ga. Pediatric of Psychology)
The most common learning disabilities among children are dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. In most cases one who suffers from a learning disability has difficulty in writing, reading, speaking, listening, and mathematics (NCLD 2001), which can be frustrating for a child with LD in school. As mentioned previously, children with LD not only have issues retaining information but also expressing it in the form of writing. This learning disability is known as Dysgraphia.(LDAA 2018) Dysgraphia is another neurological disorder that focuses and emphasizes on writing. When a child with this LD is first introduced to writing, they typically make unnecessary spaces between their letters, and some letters will be larger than others. "They will also write the wrong words and misspell them, even after they are corrected" (NINDS 2003).
Dyslexia, one of the most common learning disorder, is known to impair a person’s ability to read, write, and spell (NINDS 2003). In spite of persons normal intelligence, their reading level is normally below average. They usually have “trouble with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.” (NINDS 2003). Some of the complaints Children with dyslexia are "they cannot read their textbooks, do not have enough time to finish tests, cannot take notes, and are unable to read their own handwriting" (GVSU 2000). Dyslexia does not affect every person the same way, and signs of the disorder may not be prevalent until later, when grammar and more in-depth. Dr. Fox (GA Pediatric of Psychology) stated that there 12 types pf Dyslexia. Without the years dyslexia has been labeled to only have few signs like letter, words, and number reversal, when in reality has so much more.

Through research(NCLD 2001),doctors have categorized a learning disability as a neurological disorder, explaining why the brain struggles to compute or retain what material goes inside. In addition, learning disabilities can be non verbal as well. Non verbal learning disability is demonstrated when a person has a problem processing what they see. Not having these abilities stated above can be devastating to a child especially when it overlooked or un-diagnosis. Furthermore, not being able to read or remember instructions, interpret visual cues or express how you feel verbally and physically (writing) would be challenge in not only in school but in everyday life.

Lakesha, you have a good start. I made some suggestions so that you can improve your final draft! First, you will need some research/study throughout your statements. This will make your claim and supportive sentences stronger. As I follow your posting, I noticed that you did not specifically post your research question. I think you should define your research question clearly and limit the scope of your research. It seems like you touched various parts in learning disabilities so make it sure to narrow your scope so you can dig more deep.

Justify using an interdisciplinary approach
Challenges with learning disabilities is vastly complex because it covers multiple disciples such as behavior and learning disabilities, education psychology, family and community literacy, and child growth and development.The uniqueness about learning disabilities is it can not be categorize as one disability. It has many facets or characteristics that connects one to another. For example, in many cases psychologist have found that children with dyslexia is typically accompanied with hyperactivity(ADHD) (Rebhan MD 1971). Thus making it difficulty to concentrate on material taught or presented, which has been viewed as a behavior problem in several cases. Likewise making it extremely important to implement a multidisciplinary team. Having a team like this is necessary for the success of a child with a learning disability.
Furthermore,due to the vastness of a learning disability no single discipline has been able to address the problem comprehensively. For example “One type of learning disability affecting mathematics can stem from an individual's difficulty processing language, another might be related to visual spatial confusion, while yet another could include trouble retaining math facts and keeping procedures in the proper order.” (GVSU 2000). Further explaining how multiple disciplines must be applied to address the challenges of learning disabilities among children.
Learning disabilities is a ongoing project, it is unresolved . Doctors as well as researchers are still looking for answers in why learning disabilities even exist.There is no exact explanation or answer to where learning disabilities originated from. However researchers have come to some conclusions such as learning disabilities can be hereditary. Often times when tracing the disorder, studies will indicate that parents and other family members of the child have been diagnosed with that particular LD as well. So it’s understandable why LD could be classified as genetic. Another possibility could be difficulties during and after pregnancy, If the mother constantly drank or used drugs, or if there was a difficult labor, a long absence of oxygen, or" low birth weight this could impair the child and lead to further problems (i.e. a learning disability) toxic substances or head injuries to the child after birth may also cause learning disabilities". (NCLD 2001)
<sub>
</sub>

Identify Relevant Disciples
Children with learning disabilities in low income areas is a major problem. Through research, the issue of serving children in poverty stricken areas is more complex and requires multiple aspects of approach than children who not restricted by low social economic status (Levin 2007). There are several disciplines that would be relevant with this on going and growing issue among children misidentified or unidentified with learning disabilities. However, I will narrow it down to a few behavior/learning disabilities, educational psychology, child growth and development and biology. Being properly diagnosed has been a challenge for children in low income areas. It was found that some children are being misdiagnose based off of assumptions rather than supporting data. The key to discovering a child's learning disability is to determine if a child has a learning deficiency or if other factors (such as poverty) are contributing factors to their academic difficulties? This further explains why educational psychology is necessary for this problem. Discovering learning disabilities has always been a challenge since 1920's.Over the years the standard for proper diagnosis has changed. Some inappropriate behaviors contributed to a child's frustration within the classroom. Which also justified why using behavior and learning disabilities as a discipline is so prevalent.
The study of the mind and influence of the environment ties into biology and psychology. Both disciplines can further explain the chemical imbalance of the brain in children with learning disabilities. Furthermore explaining why not only the environment plays a role but genetics does too.

Why did I choose child growth and development? A child growth and development flourish by the influence of his or her culture. Culture can simply means one environment. Therefore, cultural and linguistic diversity have increased creating challenges in today’s schools. Learning disabilities occur in all cultures and ethnic groups and it is often difficult to tell if a child’s academic struggles are due to a learning disability or a cultural or language difference (Ortiz, 1997; Taylor, Yzquierdo, Lopez-Reyna, & Flippin, 2004). The U.S Department of Education, 2001, has emphasized the increase in low income families has among the Hispanics, African American, and American native population.

To further expound on the issue on learning disabilities increase in low income areas, researchers have already established the connection between poverty and education, demonstrating that there is a correlation between poverty and delayed language development, lower literacy rates, poor math skills, and higher rates of emotional and behavioral disabilities (Manning & Gaudelli, 2006). The lack of support in these areas can impact a child's growth in learning such as the where the children actually learn. In Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools, Kozol (1991) described the inferior physical facilities in which poor students are educated. He gives an in depth overview of how life is in urban schools. Kozol includes boarded up windows, faulty heating and cooling systems, toilets that do not work, crowded rooms, peeling paint, and kitchens and cafeterias tainted with backed up sewage. He continues to speak passionately about the ongoing crisis in low income schools, making further makes it more difficult to diagnosis a childs learning disability.

As I continued to research the challenges children face with learning disabilities, I've found that the environment of a child plays a significant role in a child's learning as well. As i was watching the videos, I come across three strong disciplines pertaining to my topic, however I will only discuss two. The two disciplines that I have discovered through research that goes hand and hand is child growth and development and family and community literacy. The U.S Department of Education, 2001, has emphasized the increase in low income families among the Hispanics, African American, and American native population.Further understanding how and why a child growth and development plays a huge role in his or her learning as well . Here is the connection between child growth and development and family and community literacy, in the video it states 1/6 adults in the US read at a elementary level. Children learn how to read by listening to people read and speak around them. If the adults around a child can not read, it makes it difficult for the child to know how to articulate words correctly which further enables them to learn. As I continued to look at the statistics understanding the importance how important it is to understand why a child perform the way he or she does.
Low-income communities only have 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. This fact is even more impactful when we consider that introducing a child to books and reading at home before entering school is one of the biggest influencers on children’s academic success and opportunities. As a result, 3 out of every 4 children in the Metro areas like Charleston are not ready for kindergarten because they lack the vocabulary needed (Literacy Impact 2018). I have also found when parents have less than a high school education, they are more likely to live at or below the poverty line. Living in poverty has a huge impact on the lives of young people. Kids and young adults living in poverty are more likely to be absent from school. Also, young adults (ages 16-25) whose families live in poverty are 7 times more likely to drop out of high school than their middle class counterparts (Lit 2018) Coming across this information further confirmed Dr. Greenburg theory in the family and community Literacy video. on the impact of adult literacy with child growth and development. Researching the impact of low income communities on children's learning have given me a new perspective. There are so many aspects to this notion, lack of support to adult literacy.

The environment of a child is significant along with the support from ones who has guardianship.
When parents have less than a high school education, they are more likely to live at or below the poverty line. Living in poverty has a huge impact on the lives of young people. Kids and young adults living in poverty are more likely to be absent from school and suffer in his or her growth and development. Also, young adults (ages 16-25) whose families live in poverty are 7 times more likely to drop out of high school than their middle class counterparts (LIT 2018). With that being said, a child's growth and development flourish by the influence of his or her culture. Culture can simply means one environment. Therefore, cultural and linguistic diversity have increased creating challenges in today’s schools. Learning disabilities as no limitations, it occurs in all cultures and ethnic groups and it is often difficult to determine if a child’s academic struggles are due to a learning disability or a cultural or language difference (Ortiz, 1997; Taylor, Yzquierdo, Lopez-Reyna, & Flippin, 2004).
Here is the connection between child growth and development and family and community literacy, in the video it states 1/6 adults in the US read at a elementary level. Children learn how to read by listening to people read and speak around them. If the adults around a child can not read, it makes it difficult for the child to know how to articulate words correctly which enables them to learn. To further back my argument the statistics I found in a literacy article showed how
low-income communities only have 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. This fact has more impact when we considering a child's introduction to books and reading at home before entering school is one of the biggest influencers on children’s academic success. As a result, 3 out of every 4 children in the Metro areas like Charleston, are not ready for kindergarten because they lack the vocabulary needed (Literacy Impact 2018). ) Coming across this information further confirmed Dr. Greenburg theory in the family and community Literacy video on adult literacy. The connection between adult literacy and child growth and development was a eye opener. Dr. Kwon lecture on child growth and development gave me more insight and outlook on how a child develop. Further assisting me in understanding why a child's environment is so important. As a future teacher, these video along with others has given me a new perspective on my approach and tools in my interaction with children along with new tools teaching children .
In spite of the of the diversities in several of the articles, magazines, and internet research the key elements shown several similarities. For example, early invention, lack of educational support, adult literacy, genetics, environment factors(poverty), and stunt in child's growth and development has been found to be the most dominant reasoning in the development and diagnosis of children with learning disabilities in low income areas. However, in one of the articles focusing on child growth and development written by several authors showed conflict from the beginning argument to the end. Due to the lack of siting throughout the article, the authors concluded the evident was inconsistent and contrary.

This project is very dear to me. Having children with learning disabilities is an challenge. My goal was to bring awareness of the struggles children face when having a learning disabilities. However, as I was researching the problem, it was very difficult to find material that focus solely on this issue. I came to the conclusion that the subject was too broad, so I made the topic more toward low income families. The reason for this is because I did noticed during my search the consistency of children with learning disabilities ratio being in low income areas. I also saw race being an element as well. The statics from several sites showed African Americans and Hispanics being at the top for children diagnosed with learning disabilities. This further backs several authors argument of determining a child's struggles academically. Is it based upon an actually learning disability, language barrier, or the stressors of his or her environment. Coming across that argument challenge my own personal bias. Watching my children who truly have a learning disability struggle not only academically but day to day with understanding daily task gives a different point of view. When I first approached this topic it was to simply bring awareness to educators, parents who child has the signs but not diagnosed, liberty for parents and children who can relate to the struggle, and anyone who is willing to listen especially those that work with children.

Hi Lakesha, thanks for your response. It looks like your draft is still in the middle of working so I hope following comments are helpful to wrap up your final draft! First, don’t forget to have at least 500 words for your response and additional 150 words or 1 min 30 sec of audio for your reflection. When you work on your final draft, I would like to see your understanding of how an interdisciplinary approach has enlarged your understanding of the problem as a whole and how this approach is applicable beyond the classroom. Also, I feel you can go further about how this interdisciplinary approach has influenced your perception of disciplinary expertise. You have explained well about how this approach challenged your bias on the problem, good job! Also, don’t forget to proofread your final draft to avoid any possible mechanical errors!

I came to the conclusion that the subject was too broad, so I centered the topic more toward low income families. The reason for this is because I noticed during my research the consistency in the material found, associating children with learning disabilities to low income areas. I also saw race being an element as well. The statics from several sites showed African Americans and Hispanics being at the top for children diagnosed with learning disabilities. This illustration further supports several authors argument of how a child's struggles academically is determined. Is it based upon an actually learning disability genetically based, or is it a language barrier, or the stress of his or her environment . Coming across these arguments challenged my own personal bias. Watching my children who truly have learning disabilities struggle not only academically but day to day with daily task gave me a different point of view going into this project. When I first approached this topic it was to simply bring awareness to educators, parents who child has the signs but not diagnosed, liberty for parents and children who can relate to the struggle, and anyone who is willing to listen especially those that work with children.
However, using an interdisciplinary approach has vastly enlarged my understanding of this topic by looking at the problem from several different angles such as looking at a child growth and development being staggered by his or her environment, adult literacy, or language barriers.
Now looking at this problem through the lens of a interdisciplinary approach has expound my understanding of why and how this problem is applicable beyond a classroom not only for myself but for children who specifically face this struggle on a daily basis.
Previously my view was limited by looking at the challenge genetically only, now through several disciples my view has expanded. Through research I was made aware of how a child's environment can impact his or learning significantly. As a stated before in step three, researchers have already established the connection between poverty and education, demonstrating that there is a correlation between poverty and delayed language development, lower literacy rates, poor math skills, and higher rates of emotional and behavioral disabilities (Manning & Gaudelli, 2006). A child's environment can either influence or hinder a child's growth and development, which important for an educators and caregivers to understand other reasons why child struggle academically.
It has also been determined that when parents who has less than a high school education, they are more likely to live at or below the poverty line, which can also affect children learning. Living in poverty has a huge impact on the lives of young people. Kids and young adults living in poverty are more likely to be absent from school. This further supports why the ratio for children in low income areas has learning disabilities
