Hello everyone!  I am Mrs. Walston and I am your instructor for this course.  Here is a picture of my family white water rafting this summer! It was AMAZING, ya'll!!! That water was FREEZING!!!! Brrr! We camped in the mountains for a few days and then rafted on the Watauga River (and I'm not even an outdoorsy girl, but it was still hands down the best family trip ever!) I am blessed to have these three boys call me mama.  My boys are ages 12, 10, and 7.  Oh, and that guy to my right- that's my hubs. After almost 18 years, I think I'll keep him :)  So, just a brief rundown-I am an ECU graduate with my BSW and MSW degrees.  I have worked in various field settings but the bulk of my time was spent as a Child Welfare Worker at a local DSS.  I have been teaching at NCC for about four + years and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  I love sharing my passion for human services with students who share my enthusiasm. Looking forward to an awesome semester and getting to know each of you! My name is Ashley, I haven't been to school in 3 years and have never taken an online course before...(kinda nervous, lol) Anyway, I have 2 boys that call me mom, one of whom is Autistic and calls me Ashley. I have had my world turned upside down this summer when I left their dad due to a domestic violence issue. On top of that, I had to leave my home and move in with my adopted mom and her family.....a household of 7! It's been an adjustment for all, and not an easy one at that. We spent some time at the pool where my oldest son (who's 5) learned how to swim. I'm so proud!! I wanted to get into social work/ Human Services because I had a daughter whom I placed for adoption at birth. She's 7 now. It still hurts that I couldn't raise her myself, but I know that she's in a better, more stable home. I recently had an experience with an adopted mom where I shared my story as a birth mom and it helped her with what she was going through. It was the most wonderful experience and very therapeutic for myself. I do have a full time job and take care of my grandfather so I felt that an online would fit me best at the time.I'm 21 years old, and i have no children. I like do stay home, watch movies, eat junk food, and read and spend time with the love of my life and my cousin, its always nothing but laughs and good times . This summer me an the family took a nice vacation to Myrtle Beach I really enjoyed laying on the beach WITH MY LOVE, listening to the ocean waters wash upon the shore, feeling the ocean breeze in the night, and watching the gorgeous fire crackers was marvelous, GOD IT WAS MARVELOUS!. Most of all I enjoyed the quality time spent with people I love the most. I DID include a picture so no need to horrify you with another. As far as my summer, I basically spent it inside comforted by Netflix and food. I an avid motorcyclist, love to travel to places that no one notices, and my absolute favorite food is bbq spareribs. My end goal as far as school WAS to get my counseling degree and eventually open my own office, but a previous instructor planted a seed in my head to actually TEACH a human services course so presently I'm working to solidify my decision on that. I spent many years addicted to various drugs and now plan to use that unfortunate period in my life to assist myself and others in the future. I think that with my exstensive knowledge of various drugs and their effects on the human body, as well as the changes and problems that people go through, some succeeding, many failing, that I'd do well to help others. I have a daughter that's 14 years old that I haven't seen since she was 3 that didn't even know I existed until she intercepted a message I sent to her mom on Facebook last year. Having her back into my life and her forgiving me and calling me Dad and telling me that she loves me after I told her TRUTHFULLY where I was and what I'd been doing all those years has been wonderful. I included this tidbit after reading Erica's because I pray that one day my daughter says the same about me as she did with her father. I think her forgiveness was aided by the fact that she found letters from me regularly dating back years that she never knew her mother had. This summer I took my children to Washington DC. While there we went to the White House. We couldn't tour the inside but we did get amazing pictures on the lawn. We also went to the memorials and the Federal reserve to see how money is produced. It was our first time going and it was amazing. I am very excited about this semester but nervous about the big project at the end.
