State’s premier said ‘twin tornadoes’ had hit northern areas

Sydney (Australia): South Australia braced for a second night of severe weather on Thursday, with tens of thousands of homes still without power after “catastrophic” storms knocked out supply to the entire population.

The total blackout caused chaos and widespread damage was reported, as authorities warned of more wild conditions to come including floods, high winds, heavy rain and surging tides.

The state’s premier Jay Weatherill said “twin tornadoes” had hit northern areas, where 40,000 households were expected to remain without electricity for a couple more days.

“Twenty-three transmission towers have been ripped out of the ground by the force of this storm event.”

I like this headline due to the fact that it explains the dastardly conditions going on on the other side of the world that we wouldn't even bother to care about unless there had been a news report regarding the the incident. How drastically natural causes can affect people's lives and cause property damage. As the quotation says that "23 transmission towers have been ripped out of the ground by the force of this storm"
Also this headline caught my attention as it explained most of the news in the headline alone

Headline: "Aleppo cowers under relentless air strikes"

This headline, featured in an article from Gulf News, is written in a very bold, large font and is framed in a very eye catching phrase which immediately grabs the reader’s attention. The headline sums up in just a few words what the article is mainly about, while adding some adjectives and extra emphasis on a few words in order to grab the attention of the reader and engage them in the article. Also, the headline is regarding a current affair of the world.

The words which the writer uses to phrase the headline are very descriptive and emphasizing. The words "Aleppo cowers" explains how the civilians of Aleppo are cowering in fear, helpless and petrified of the on-going air strikes and about how they are living and hiding in absolute fear and misery. Also, the words "Relentless air strikes" adds extra emphasis on the fact that the air strikes are brutal, horrendous and petrifying to the citizens and how they won’t stop bombing the city and are more than willing to go on.

With the Syrian government, Russia and other allies of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad continuing to bombard Aleppo and its suburbs, the humanitarian crisis keeps growing. An estimated 250,000 to 275,000 people live in areas held by anti-government rebels that are a focus of intense airstrikes and artillery bombardment.

Last weekend, in the city of Aleppo, airstrikes killed 45 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory said last Sunday that at least 327 civilians, including 76 children and 41 women, were killed in Aleppo during the previous 15 days.

According to the article featured in Gulf News, 72 innocent lives, including 7 children, were taken within the short span of just 2 days and rows of buildings razed, along with about 2 million civilians being trapped with absolutely no access to water and power supplies.

Syria conflict: Russia 'driving rebels into hands of extremists'

The UN says 400 civilians, including many children, have been killed in Aleppo in the past week

Russia's increasing military action in Syria is forcing moderate elements within the Syrian opposition into the hands of extremists, a US state department spokesman has said.

Mark Toner said renewed Russian and Syrian air strikes were making a difficult situation "more confused".

The US says it may end co-operation with Russia over its action in Syria.

But Russia has accused the US of trying to spare a jihadist group in its bid to oust Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the US had broken its promise to separate the powerful Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra Front) and other extremist groups from more moderate rebels.

I have chosen this headline "Syria conflict: Russia 'driving rebels into hands of extremists'." Because it has a type of descriptive language for example the phrase 'driving rebels into hands of extremist' what the writer has done is he has given two meanings to this phrase, an implicit meaning for this text would mean that the rebels are being forced to follow extremists and see to it that the rebels do what the extremists tell them to do and an explicit meaning would be extremists are literally picking up rebels and taking them to any particular place

The writer has also written the headline in such a way that readers think it's catchy and would want to read the article hence the writer also made the headline simply but made sure not add so many details in the headline itself

The writer has also used a synonym which is 'driving' to indicate another many such as taking or snatching this just for the reader to have a better understanding towards the article and this also catches the readers attention.

Source:http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37525655

Tim Burton shirks responsibility about diversity

This article is about the director of 'Ms. Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children' being asked why
most of the characters in his movie were white. He replied in a way that he avoided responsibility
and fault for it. He gave examples like "I grew up watching Blaxploitation movies and I went like 'OK, that's great.'
I didn't ask myself why there weren't white people in the movies." The only black person in the cast was Samuel L. Jackson and
he was asked about it replying that he thought it wasn't about how Tim's method of storytelling was biased towards whites, instead it
was how it played out.

(P.S: Blaxploitation means the exploitation of black people in movies.)

This title could be changed into many things about the movie. Diversity in movies can be religion, national origin,
ancestry, age, marital status, disability.

He could be asked about any of these things in the diversity of his film.

TIM BURTON SHIRKS RESPONSIBILITY ABOUT DIVERSITY

Tim Burton, director of 'Ms. Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children' has been slammed upon for his reaction to accusations
that the movie didn't live up to the book's potential with lack of diversity. In an interview with the website Bustle, Burton
was asked why, given the popularity of the book, his film adaptation was not nearly as good. Most people claimed there
wasn't enough diversity on the roles and the movie plot. "I think that making changes to the film adaption of such a marvellous book
would ruin it," Burton replied."There's been many movie adaptions of books that have been a disappointment like 'Eragon', 'As I lay Dying',
etc."When Samuel L. Jackson was asked, he brushed it off saying that while he "noticed it," he knew that unnecessary changed would
result in a failure of a film. While the movie was a decent one, this main problem has lost it some high reviews.

Done by Nabi

HEADLINE: 'Sorry I Tased You' cake doesn't cut it for woman.
The explicit meaning behind this headline is that A Florida’s woman’s lawsuit says a deputy shot her with a stun gun, then apologized with a cake that said, “Sorry I Tased You” in blue frosting. The cake didn’t cut it for Stephanie Byron. She sued former Escambia County sheriff’s deputy Michael Wohlers in May.

This headline is a very interesting and a eye catching headline. It is basically about a women get tased by a sheriff's deputy allegedly.
Where people believe in wizards. (Ayesha)
This headline was featured on bbc news.
The headline is very attractive because of the bold text and and font size. The headline also gives a main idea on what the article is about. I found this headline very attractive and different from all the others. I think this headline would be eye catching for everyone because everyone would want to know; in which part of the world people believe in wizards.
Opening paragraph:
“I can see your future and that of everyone I meet,” smiled U Aung Baung, as the gilded dome of the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda glistened behind him in the night. “But, you have to start following Buddhist precepts before I can tell you anything.”

Everything You Need to Know About the ‘Clown Attack’

This headline is a very eye catching, attention grabbing headline about the recent clown Craze where unknown people with unknown motives dressed up as clowns started to lure children into the woods and scared the locals and since then clowns have been spotted in over 24 states in America. The headline clearly briefs us in an easy to understand language on what the article is about accurately. Knowing that this is a popular topic the writer wrote down a topic that grabs the readers attention immediately whilst informing them at the same time. The writer assigned the word attack to create fear in the reader which is also another factor to why the reader might want to read it.

In the article the writer talks about how the clown attacks started as a joke by teen pranksters and eventually got even more serious when people started to take it seriously and started to scare people. They did this by threatening schools and it even got so serious that the Penn state University organized an event to go clown hunting. This creepy topic is still being investigated by swat and the police according to the article.

First paragraph:

Clown hysteria has taken the country by storm, fueling both fear and fascination while prompting calls for calm from police departments and even from the master of horrors, Stephen King.

Website: http://time.com/4518456/scary-clown-sighting-attack-craze/
