In the 20's advertisements were fairly new. People didn't understand the purpose and concept. Due to the fact that many people were naive, sales of products with ads skyrocketed. This lead to reckless spending and often, loss of money.

Weight loss vs. Weight gain

In the 20's a curvy larger woman was more desirable than a skinny girl. Today society accepts the exact opposite. Shown in these next pictures are two ads, one from the 20's and one from this past year. Both images depict different views on the weight of a woman.

In the 20's as stated before, people were very naive. Anything claimed on ads was thought to be the one hundred percent truth.

A soap that magically washes away fat. Although the ultimate goal at the time was to not be skinny, obesity was a small issue for some. Surprisingly, this soap did very well in stores and generated a lot of income for the company. The simple idea of "washing the fat off" seems ridiculous to someone today, but back then it was an inventive and successful product.

This advertises a product to show if you are, in fact deaf. Ever wonder if you can actually hear? Most of us don't but this ad made many question their health and sanity.

Propaganda

The KKK did not hesitate to take advantage of this newfound craze. Shown here is a parody of the famous Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster. This approach is showing how american and patriotic the KKK is, convincing many to join.

Offensive, yet accepted

In the pre-civil rights era, many offensive ads were published and considered acceptable. Ads just like the one shown below were the social and cultural norm.
