The Roller Door

Almost every household contains one of these marvelous inventions but does anyone know who invented them? When where they invented? How does it work? What Simple Machines does it contain? Some posts on this padlet will be dedicated to the fantastic invention called the roller door. We hope to provide you with some of the highest quality information available.

From information gathered we are led to believe that the inventor of the roller door is the Australian company B&D Garage Doors. We are also led to believe that the Garage Roller Door was invented by B&D in 1956. We can give credit to Ben Saul for the idea of the Roller Door.

The development of the Roller Door began when Sydney inventor Ben Saul came to B&D with the idea. They (B&D) gave Saul an area to work and some materials to start but the first prototypes failed to operate. Byrne, Davidson and Saul lost interest and all the items they used were left in the corner of the work area - Saul signed away the rights to the business and then left the business.

In 1955 a meeting with Byrne, Davidson and Willoughby was adjourned to the cool of a Hyde Park bench. The men decided to have a vote to decide if they should continue to develop the roller door. The result of the vote was two to one. The men who wanted to continue won the vote.
For eight weeks, Arthur Byrne worked with Gordon Lambert, a boilermaker to refine the design of the roller door. The result was the world's first all-steel, mass produced roller door that could be rolled and unrolled without cracking. B&D sold the invention as The Roll-A-Door. The roller door contains the following simple machines, Gear, wheel and lever. The roller door is a complex machine.

B&D's Roll-A-Door debuted at the Sydney Daily Mirror Home Show in 1956 (now known as the Sydney Home Show) and became an immediate success.

In the year 1946 B&D Garage Doors was founded in Sydney by Arthur Byrne and Paul Davidson, whom started a steel fabricating business with only £140. They managed to build their own factory in Botany while undertaking large engineering works across the country. They also recruited the accountant Ray Willoughby. In 2009, B&D's Roll-A-Door featured in Australia Post's, Inventive Australia campaign. The Inventive Australia collection was dedicated to successfull Australian inventions such as the Hills Hoist, the Esky, Speedo (underwear) and the Victor lawnmower.

How the Roller Door has changed lives

The roller door has changed lives because it has given people a sense of security that there roller door is protecting all there valuables behind it. People then may be more tempted to socialise with there friends out of there home because they know that they probably won't get robbed. The roller door needs machines to help make it and humans are required to operate the machines, therefore more people are employed to operate the machines that make the roller door. Because people are so busy nowadays they wouldn't have enough time to push two large doors in. It is much quicker to pull a roller door down or press a button and watch it go down. The way the roller door rolls up into a cylinder is space saving which is vitally important because most people use there Garage as a main storage area and they need as much space as possible in it. They nylon on the side metal the the door rolls on make it quieter so that the people's neighbors won't get disturbed when roll and unroll there roller door.

In this case Don drilled 19mm holes. Sand edges. Insert dowel (or broomstick) into the drilled holes with a little PVC glue on each end. Hammer one bullet head nail through frame into dowel, to hold in place. Anchor two eye hooks (approximately 1800mm apart) in preferred position and then hang both pulleys (single pulley furthest away from anchor cleat). Screw eye bolts into centre of each end of clothesline. Tie 6mm rope into each eye bolt. Draw rope up and into first single pulley and then through double pulley. Tie off on cleat, appropriately positioned.
