Reading radar

This year I believe I grew as a reader. In the beginning of the year I wasn't able to focus and I wasn't able to read any book, not even a chapter. As time went on I was able to stay focus and I even finished 4 books this year. In the reading radar you can see I finished 3 books and I also finished my book club book. Some habits that I realized helped me, is going chapter by chapter. Finishing on a chapter helped me stay on track and made me want to keep reading to find what happens next. This reading radar shows that I stayed on track with my reading this year and finished my books even if I didn't meet my goal each week. My favorite book this year was The Hate You Give. I didn't struggle to keep up with my reading at all and most of the time I past the reading goal. the book had a harsh topic and a very real situation which kept my reading. I sadly didn't include it in my reading radar although I wish I did because it would let me see my progress more clearly.

Debate

The writing I would like to point out is my debate writing. I do realize that I didn't get a perfect grade but I think that's the reason why I love it so much. I did the whole outline by myself with no help from my partner due to his own reasons. My writing shows how much time and effort I put into it and how much research it took to make up the debate. I also went from writing essays where I barely used any evidence to a very heavy evidence based writing piece. Not getting a perfect score makes me realize that I still have room for improvement and that I need to spend more time researching it to get a very flaw-proof writing piece that makes people side with me. This writing piece wasn't my absolute favorite to do at the moment but now that I look back, I am glad we did the assignment. It helped me better my writing and I kept going back to revise my writing to make sure everyone gets the message I want them to receive.

Monthly Reflections

The monthly goal sheets that we did in the beginning of the semester show my growth because I held myself accountable and I met my goals. This shows that my habits have improved and I have been able to see improvement within myself. I also have been kinder on myself when I don't get the grade I want. I don't grade myself harshly and I have been able to accept the fact that English isn't my strongest subject. My participation in class has also improved and I been more active in class compared to the beginning where I wouldn't even say a word. I have also been able to ask for help when I need it and I have been more open on feedback. I think my overall attitude in class has improved and I have a more positive mindset.

Bookclub Poster

Continuing on about my book club, the podcast has helped me improve on my speaking skills. I was able to plan my podcast and talk about a subject I was familiar about. It helped me cut out all the unessential parts of my speech and keep my words straight forward. It also helped me listen to my partners ideas and how they believe the podcast should go. It helped me be able to take ideas from others and take my ideas to produce a group project. Another example is my book club poster. This a great example of my improvement because I was able to break down a book and produce a poster with my group. In the beginning of the year I wasn't able to finish a book let alone break it down to smaller pieces. Now not only am I able to break down a passage into multiple pieces I am also able to speak on the passage thoughtfully and make it easier for others to understand even if they haven't read the passage.

I believe that the star test isn't an accurate way to define my growth. Star tests only focus on one area of reading and I also believe that the time limit for each question makes me change my focus from trying my best to just getting the question answered. The time limit personally stresses me out and I tend to rush through each question instead of deeply reading each question thoroughly. In the beginning of the year I tested a 10.0 and then I tested a 10.3 but my most recent test I tested a 9.3. I do not believe my reading level decreased through this year because not only have I been focus and on task with my reading assignments I also have been reading complex research papers. I am able to read more challenging passages due to this and I know that my star reading score doesn't show accurate growth.

I believe I deserve an A this semester. This semester I believe that I have significantly improved and you can see it through my work. Although I have an A as of right now I believe it should remain an A because I have worked really hard to keep myself on task and I have also worked really hard to improve my work. Not only that but my effort and participation in class has improved from the beginning of the year where I refused to collaborate with classmates to not minding conversation with a few unfamiliar people.

With all these reasons I believe what I am asking for is completely fair. I believe this because I have worked nonstop on trying to improve myself day after day. Although I am far from perfect I do believe I am heading in the right direction. I know I may not be the smartest but my determination is the reason why I deserve to keep my A. Next year I will focus on continuing to improve my reading and writing skills. I would also like to improve the area of reading (star test) where I struggle the most and I guarantee that next year not only will I improve but I will exceed expectations.
