Takeaway 1: Orientalism on western films

My biggest takeaway for module #5 is the depiction of Asia and how westerners would look at this culture as weird or exotic. Orientalism started in western media like Anna and the king of Siam which has had 3 versions from 1946 to 1999. The 1946 film started as an eerie almost scary tone in the begging credits with an ambient music The country is also shown to be more exotic like with the ruler riding an elephant to meet Anna. Another version is the 1951 were the movie credits seemed more upbeat with a more cultural defying images in it. In the Film they addressed Siam as Bangkok to appease westerners do to the change of the name of the country And the Siamese people seemed to be dressed in an almost savage attire showing of spears. And in the 1999 film was more of a modern take on the story with an adventures feel which cuts to the sky in the beginning which emphasizes a new beginning as well as the people of Siam seemed to dress distinctly were women wore Wragges and the men were shirtless. Which shows different depictions of the land of Siam and how the people and culture were depicted. And in The reading of Mason the King was depicted as a shrewd and intelligent ruler not some barbaric man as depicted in the films as well as Anna Leonowens not having any romantic feeling toward the king.

Takeaway#2 : Cambodia and their Independence

Module #6 I learned the tragedy and devastating history Cambodia had to go through during the abandonment of the French imperialist which lasted from 1863 - 1953. which gave rise to Khmer Regime pushing the ideological ideas to banish all that was foreign and kill all those who worked with the past government. The regime started off in 1975 were communist leader Pol pot original "Saloth Sar" took control and wanted to set Cambodia to "day zero" destroying and killing all things westernized. In Masons book it talks about the how he killed of 20 percent of the population an estimate of 1.7 millions of Cambodians were killed specifically the educated and professional classes were being hunted and killed. While other were being killed of by bad nutrition's and Pol Pots secret prisons were he killed another 20,000s of people, Where the video talked about the mistreatment and tortures that they had to go through and confess to the crimes that they have committed and they all had to follow a set of 10 rules. Ultimately the regime ended when Cambodian and Vietnamese forces signed a peace treaty between Hun Sen and a government official from Vietnam. To me This module showed me the out comes that independence can have on people for the good or the bad.

Takeaway #3 The growing Empires of Japan and America

Module #7 I learned about the imperialistic growth between Japan and the United States. The United States grew in power from recourses and expansion from the seas and dominated international commerce. They defeated the Spaniard in battle taking over the Philippines expanding their international power and gaining them economical growth by giving them access to Asian trade markets and Latin American market due to their expansion on Cuba and Guam as well. And all of this was motivated by Economic growth and focus on their domestic problems. while Japan did it differently by 1939 Japan had conquered South Korea, Taiwan, and Manchuria Japan was able to do this because China was facing issues of their own around at the time. And with Japanese expansion they were able to acquire materials and mainly oil to help them in their conquest to expand. But then they decided to attack bases in the southern parts of China were they attacked French Indochina market the Americans started to feel threatened and wanted to make peace treaties which they have broken many times. This led them to cut of oil supplies to China which was their driving force to power and by 1941 they had a feeling they were a war then on the dawn of the 7th of December Japan attacked an air fleet base in Hawaii, Pearl Harbor more then 4,000 American lives were taken and president, Teddy Roosevelt declared war on Japan reading this I was shocked by the events that led up to this tragedy from oil and overseas markets. Then on August 6th the Atomic bob was dropped destroying most of Hiroshima and the Bomb was approved by Winston Churchill the new president at the time, then 14 days later the Japanese surrendered the war. To me this showed the world how powerful America could be and showed how much of a economic powerhouse they can be.

This was film told the story of the devastating time Cambodia faced during the Khmer regime. This was a requirement to watch for module #6 and gives us the perspective of a young girl named Loung ung and we follow her and her family throughout the film. I felt like the film was trying to convey a sense of sadness and pity for the people because that's really how i felt through the whole movie seeing the lives and living conditions the regime were putting the people in. At the end of the film we got a nice ending were the girl reunited with her brothers and sister who survived the regime and showing us how half of the population oof Cambodia was killed of during these events.

Currently 3 weeks ago a bomb was detanated in an airport in Japan and This bomb can go back from when the US and Japan were still at war showing of Historic evidence and impact the war had on Japan soil and apparently when reading the article they said that many bombs that the US dropped in Japan like Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe etc., have not been unearthed meaning many more bombs could be underground risking the lives of many citizens in Japan and apparently the airport were the bomb detonated was the training field for Kamikaze pilots took suicide missions.

Do the Japanese regret any of the actions that they have committed during World War 2?

Apparently Yes I read some articles that the prime minister of Japan keeps on apologizing over the events of the War and the actions that they have committed during the battlefield and attacks
