Virtual reality (VR) has come to the forefront of technology in our ever-changing culture. It has a wide array of applications, one being within the pediatric health-care setting. Venipuncture, a routinely requested medical procedure among doctors, is often perceived as painful and distressing for children and adolescent patients. Studies have shown VR to be an effective nonpharmalogical method of pain management during venipuncture sticks and other medical procedures in children. One patient in the VR condition reported that the VR “keeps your mind busy and away from the needle. It made it easier and faster." (Gold & Mahrer, 2018)

Benefits of using VR during medical procedures includes:
-VR headset readily available at stores.
-Reasonably priced.
-Interactive software that is always changing to keep patients entertained.
-Controlled by head movements, therefore freeing up arms needed for procedures.
-Some headsets also use breaths to control the game, which can lead to further relaxation.
-Less pain and anxiety experienced by patients.
-VR headset is easily cleaned between patients to reduce transmission of infections.
(Gold & Mahrer, 2018)

As both a nurse and a mother, this is one particular innovation that I am very interested in. If advances in technology have given us something that is cost effective and easy to obtain to make our children more comfortable, why not utilize it? Just as the video I provided shows, use of VR greatly reduced the pain and anxiety experienced by the patient. I believe this is a great use of technology in the health care setting. I would hope to have this as an available option to my children if at all possible.

My five strengths are: Arranger, analytical, self-assurance, maximizer, and ideation.

Team:
Amelia – Adaptability: Change is hard for many. Amelia will help ease the transition of using new technology during procedures, which may prove to be difficult for some who are more comfortable doing it the "old" way.

Angelica – Analytical: Angelica will be able to look at the bigger picture and think of all situations that we may face in rolling out this new technology.

David – Deliberative: David anticipates any obstacles or risks involved in using VR in the patient care setting and thinks of ways to overcome them.

Emily – Empathy: Empathy is a quality needed in every area of healthcare, but I believe even more so when you are working with young children who may not understand. Emily will bridge the communication gap between caregivers and children.

Faith – Futuristic: Inspired by the future. What is more futuristic than VR? Faith can influence others to see the advantages of this new technology.
