Constructivism is a method of teach in which the students are encouraged to collaborate with peers, ask questions, and work hands on. In this type of teaching the teacher will teach things as a whole and then work their way in teaching the sections after. Teachers are there to guide students learning rather than lecture at them.

When students are up, moving around and using their hands, children seem to be more interested and retain the information better. Often times, especially with these newer generations, it can be hard to keep their attention on the task at hand and even more difficult to have the retain the material. By doing things such as project based learning, the children will pay more attention and retain the information more effectively. They will have fun while doing so too!

Constructivism fosters collaborative conversations and creates a communicative classroom environment. Students working together to ask and answer questions promotes growth and learning. Students need to be able to advocate for what they would like to bring to the conversation but also have to be able to negotiate with their peers to come to a compromise on things that they may not see eye to eye on. This will help them be more successful as adults. As we often have to do this in jobs and other areas of our lives.

Some people disagree with constructive learning, finding that constructive learning is not as successful as traditional textbook and exams type of teaching. Some believe that only certain types of students will benefit from this type of teaching or that traditional teaching gets farther in the material.

Whatever the reason is, what do you think: Traditional vs. Constructive?

In traditional teaching, students are scored mainly how well they do on an exam. This can give you an altered perception of what a student is capable of. With constructive teaching, a student is measured off of a variety of things such as observation, student work, and so on. Studies seem to show that tests are not always reliable sources of data reflecting a students capabiliy.
