칭기즈칸이 영웅인지 학살자인지는 보는 관점에 따라 다를 것 같다. 몽골의 입장에서는 위대한 영웅이었겠지만, 지배당한 나라들의 입장에서는 잔혹한 학살자였을 것이다.
몽골제국이 성립되면서 당시까지만 해도 교류에 그쳤던 동서양의 문물들이 융합하는 기회를 맞이하게 되었지만, 반대로 칭기즈칸이 다른 나라들을 정복하는 과정에서 여러 도시와 유물들을 파괴하게 되면서 후세 사람들에게 그 가치를 전달할 기회를 잃었기 때문이다.

그러나 그가 학살을 했다고 해서 무조건 무자비한 학살자라고 생각하는 것은 굉장히 서구중심적인 생각이다. 벨기에의 레오폴트 2세도 콩고 원주민들을 무자비하게 착취하고 학살하는 등의 만행을 벌였다.
더군다나 그는 동양과 서양을 모두 제패하고 둘 사이의 교류를 촉진시켰다. 이러한 결과로 서양과 동양 사이의 교류가 매우 활발해졌으며 그 업적이 지금까지 남아 현재의 지구촌이 만들어졌다. 또한 그는 정치적 개혁도 일구어냈다.
