Most of my students have a firm grasp on narrative writing. Most of them understand the various narrative writing techniques that they can use when responding to a narrative prompt because of the time that has been spent on narrative writing. My students also have a general idea of what argumentative writing entails. They have completed an argumentative writing assignment; however, I know that more time needs to be spent focusing on argumentative writing as well as informative/explanatory writing.

Currently, we are still working on incorporating strong narrative strategies and applying pov (1st is great; 3rd objective/omniscient is still a struggle) . I have started some rigorous instruction in applying figure language into narrative writing. I feel this technique will inherently teach students to be detailed and descriptive in their writing. This is our weakness.
On the other hand, our strength is informational writing, which we achieved by utilizing the paragraph precis strategy to create objective summaries of what we have read. I also incorporated adding textual evidence to this type of writing to make it more analytical. This has been a great strategy and we have seen good growth in this standard.

Some students never complete their thoughts leaving you with fragments. On the other hand, I have a few students who use transitions, tier II vocabulary, and organization in their writing

Writing strengths overall would be content and details that they include, not evidence from text, but the content that they choose to include in their writing. A deficit would be properly citing evidence to support their content or opinion. In small group, I presented an anchor chart that helps to identify when we use quotation marks and citations. The chart displays quotations, paraphrasing and summarizing. I put strong emphasis on citing, since all three ways to give evidence require citations. Then, I modeled for them how to answer a question from our novel properly citing my source. Then they had to complete the next question in small group, using the chart as a guide. Today, they are writing an opinion essay based on two articles. Without me there, this will act as an opinion pretest to inform me about what areas I need to put more focus on.
