Christianity was the central part of life. The church held all social events.

  • pilgrimages- religious journeys the church encouraged people to go on
  • popular pilgrimage destination was Canterbury, near London, England
  • the church had the most power and grew politically 
  • most people left land to the church when they died
  • some clergy got so caught up in politics they did not deal with religious affairs 
  • when monks were sick or old they would get treated in the infirmary
  • the main abbey church was the largest building in the Cluny Monastery

Clergy were so into politics they did not focus on spiritual matters. This made people mad.
  • the monks of Cluny followed a strict schedule of prayer and religious services
  • religious order- a group of people who dedicate their lives to religion and follow common rules
  • 1100s people thought the rules weren't strict enough so they created new rules
  • vows of silence and not speaking to each other
  • monks spent ours  copying documents
  • friars- people who belonged to religious orders but lived and worked among the general public
  • Saint Francis of Assisi made new improved rules

So the church opened up some universities with classes people could take, all in Latin. The main thing the universities taught was religion.
  • a philosopher, Thomas Aquinas believed that rational thought could be used to support Christian beliefs
  • natural law- Thomas thought God had created a law that governed how the world operated
  • teachers at the universities were clergy 
  • taught religion, law, medicine, astronomy, and other courses
  • at student´s graduation, they wore  caps and gowns just like today
  • only boys could attend universities at the age 14

All of the archetiture in the Middle Ages is the same, Gothic. The archetiture in the Middle Ages honored God.
  • in the 1100s Europeans built cathedrals in a style called Gothic architecture
  • Cathedrals were tall and had huge stain glass windows
  • clothing they wore were out of strands of gold
  • books were colored and decorated with bright colors and thin sheets of silver and gold
  • when the sun signed through the stain glass windows of the cathedral, many bright colors came shining through
  • ornate painting and tapestries covered the ceilings and walls
