Fish experts have said the mass die-off of fish in the Darling River could result in lower native fish stocks in South Australia, Queensland and Victoria. ... Previous research has found much of the Murray Darling Basin's native fish population comes from the Menindee Lakes and the lower Darling River.

Groundwater is a finite resource. It is replenished only when surface water seeps into the aquifers — a process called recharge.Recharge comes from two primary sources. When it rains, water infiltrates the soil until it reaches the aquifer. Water from rivers and streams may also move downwards to an aquifer beneath the bed of the watercourse.

In response to the millennium drought and the continuing over-allocation of MDB water resources by the states, in 2007 Prime Minister John Howard proposed a $10 billion 10-year National Plan for Water Security. He called for the MDB states to transfer their powers to enable the Commonwealth to oversee the management of the MDB. The MDBC would be reconstituted as an Authority (MDBA), responsible for setting a cap on the sustainable use of Basin water resources.
