         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Khmer were skilled rice farmers, having learned how to grow rice from the Chinese. The Khmer region's many wet and fertile river delta's were ideal for cultivating rice. Khmer built water systems like canals, dikes, and dams. As a result,the farmers were able to produce three or four rice harvests a year. Rice fed Angkor's population of 1.5 million and produced huge surplus for export. This intensive rice cultivation was the foundation of Khmer prosperity, stability, and power, which expanded across Southeast Asia.</div>]]></description>
