I personally have experienced scope creep over this summer when I was creating a marketing plan for a handful of various farmers, which is a large document containing most of their farm's financials to help guide them on when and how to sell their grain, when one farmer asked if I could help him on when to buy and sell livestock as well as when to buy fertilizers and chemicals.

We're in year 2 of a 3-year capital campaign that includes 20+ deferred maintenance and small improvement projects. Scope creep is everywhere since we have so many projects. We have staff and members who want to expand named projects, we have some who want to add new projects to the scope, and the scope of many projects creep once we get into them. We have a parking lot repair project going on right now, and in the 2 years since we first set the scope of this project, the parking lot conditions have severely worsened, requiring us to increase the scope.

A teacher wants to create a basic website for her classroom. As the teacher works on the website, she shares it with students and parents. They get excited and suggest adding more features. Adding these new features takes much more time, so she might not finish in two weeks. Along with this, the teacher feels overwhelmed trying to handle all the new requests along with her teaching duties. This scenario I think shows how easy it is to add too much to a project. By focusing on her original goals and finishing the essential parts first, the teacher can complete her website without feeling overwhelmed. Once it's launched, she can think about adding new features later.

I have witnessed scope creep on even the smallest of projects or tasks. One instance was when our manager wanted us to have our personnel use a daily log sheet for how many patients we saw per day and what for. It was a simple task and the excel worksheet had already been developed in the share point. All three of us supervisors were on board, and we informed everyone on a Teams huddle that afternoon. What happened though was that one of the supervisors opened it up for discussion and it started going off the rails at that point. We started getting complaints or suggestions on what should be on the log sheet. Suggestions are warranted and always heard from our employees, but we had already developed worksheet to what we wanted represented in our report. This simple task became a task in itself in order to implement.

A hypothetical scope creep scenario would be one I could relate to in my current project for this course. I could prepare my normal deliverables and then decide to add new deliverables like cybercrime technology and new case management software without adjusting the project timeline or factoring in any budgetary changes or any other resources that may be needed.

I would say in high school I was the best test taker and to this day I’ve always struggled and I would always realize something after we get out test scores back to us. When I would get my test score back I would get very excited and tell myself that it was a great score and I studied for a long time and it shows. But then I ask around asking everyone what they got on the test and I find out that everyone else got a higher score the test. My score doesn’t seem to be as impressive anymore since I found that out. But it’s still a good score but not as good as everyone els.

My friend asked me to help him write an essay. At first, he just asked me to check for spelling errors and punctuation mistakes and that was fine because it is a basic look over of his work. He then asked me to help him rewrite a paragraph because he didn’t know if it sounded good enough and I did because he’s my friend, right? He then asked me to help rewrite some more paragraphs so I did because he is my friend and I want to help. Before I knew it, I was redoing his project but he took me out for food after but I got stuck doing his assignment so next time, I will set boundaries.
