(Julia N)
The primary non-acting performance disciplines in the Music and Live Entertainment Industry are singing and dancing. Aside from the physical skills of singing and dancing, training in these areas develop musicality, physical and mental resilience, stamina, flexibility and strength, confidence in vocal and physical expression, physical awareness as it relates to health and conditioning and, awareness of style as it connects to culture. As entertainers, a broad understanding and execution of various styles within these disciplines is highly desirable supported by an understanding of ones body to develop and maintain performance conditioning and physical/mental health.

n.b the names of the dance units will be workshopped further!

Suggested Units

Trimester 1
1. The Sounds We Make: This is Your Voice
Exploring the dynamic nature of the human voice! The focus of this unit is to develop students understanding and practice of:
1) How their voice works (anatomy, physiology and body-mind connection, singing and movement)
2) The science of vocal sound (vocal acoustics),
3) The pillars of healthy/sustainable singing technique (Bodymapping, Breathing and Support, Alignment, Contemporary Vocal Qualities, Awareness of Vocal Health)
4) The foundations of Music Theory for singers (reading music, sight singing, scales, intervals, rhythm, dynamics, texture and tempo).

This unit explores the fundamentals of the human voice, our physical awareness of technique and vocal health as singers and the development of the musical brain as a necessary component for continued improvement in musical expression through interactive lectures, workshops and practical skill development.

2. All That Jazz: Jazz Technique and Performance
Considered the foundation for most dance styles this unit will explore the foundation technique, performance skills, history and cultural context of traditional jazz dance. Students will have the opportunity to practice the techniques of jazz dance, develop dance performance skills and physical awareness and conditioning while learning about the history, important people and modern performance contexts for the style. Theory will include vocabulary/terminology, dancer physiology and general health as a dancer. The unit will also begin preparing students for live performance through a stage exam showcasing their pure dance skills in addition to an integrated vocal/dance performance.

3. Grooves and Culture: Street Dance.
Hip hop/street dance is one of the top commercial performance dance styles in the Music and Live Entertainment Industry. Through a series of lectures, technique workshops and choreographed routines students will learn the fundamental Hip Hop/Street Dance grooves and apply them in choreography while exploring the significant cultural history of the style including it's impact in the modern performance space. The unit will also begin preparing students for live performance through a stage exam showcasing their pure dance skills in addition to an integrated vocal/dance performance.

Trimester 2
1. The Modern Vocalist: Style and Performance
The are many music genres in the Contemporary Commercial Music sector with the modern vocalist often required to navigate more than one style. Students will explore and apply the musical and vocal stylings of Pop, Indie-Acoustic, Country, Rock, RnB, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre and Jazz/Soul and the techniques of a convincing vocal performance through analysis of top live performers, lectures and workshops. Practical skills will be supported by a theory component which establishes each styles significance in the modern performance context as well as important figures and events of note. The unit builds upon the technique foundations and basic musicianship of The Sounds We Make: This Is Your Voice. The unit will also begin preparing students for live performance through a stage exam showcasing the student's chosen vocal style.

2. We Dance and Tell Stories: Contemporary Dance
A highly expressive dance style that combines elements of modern, jazz, lyrical and ballet, students will learn the foundation techniques of contemporary dance while exploring a new style of physical expression and storytelling. This unit will continue the physical development of the Tri 1 Jazz Unit building upon the principles of healthy movement and physical expression in a performance environment. The history, important people and modern performance context of the style will support the acquisition of the practical performance skills. The unit will also begin preparing students for live performance through a stage exam showcasing their pure dance skills in addition to an integrated vocal/dance performance.

3. Hips and Lashes: Commercial Jazz
Alongside Hip Hop/Street dance, Commercial Jazz is an incredibly relevant dance style for the modern entertainer. Building upon the techniques established in All That Jazz, the modern performance flavours of Grooves and Culture, and the strength and conditioning in Contemporary Dance, the commercial jazz unit will explore the foundation techniques of this dance style alongside it's development as a style, important dancers/choreographers and relevance for the modern Entertainment industry. This unit rounds out the four dance styles suggested as the foundation for the skilled modern entertainer. The unit will also begin preparing students for live performance through a stage exam showcasing their pure dance skills in addition to an integrated vocal/dance performance.

Trimester 3
1. How Do You Feel? Health and Wellbeing for Commercial Entertainers
Preparing students for the rigour of live performance this unit continues the development of all dance and singing skills through drills and choreography and re-contextualises these skills for a full length integrated live performance. The theory explored for this unit includes: health and nutrition, mental health management/developing resilience and rehearsal and performance etiquette. This unit presents the first opportunity for students to participate in a performance which requires higher levels of physical and mental stamina, to follow the direction of choreographers/lecturers in rehearsal and on the day in addition to their ability to self-manage their health and wellbeing throughout.

Trimester 4
1. Digital Storytelling and Expression
Students have thus far utilised their performance disciplines in a live performance context. In addition to the maintenance of students' dance/singing skills, this unit introduces storytelling for digital mediums by exploring the requirements for a digital performance context through the design and execution of a music video or recorded integrated concept. In addition to the physical maintenance of performance skills across their dance/music disciplines students will learn the process for planning, collaborating and executing a digital/recorded performance concept. Additionally, students will use their technical knowledge about cameras and editing to plan the technical help and creative capture requirements of their performance. (This unit could be done in collaboration with a Screen Unit?)

Trimester 5
1. Industry and Original Content
How does one design and execute original content as an independent creative? This unit explores methods for developing original live content alongside the industry knowledge necessary to plan and execute a live performance external to the university setting. Students will utilise previously developed creative skills such as writing, arranging, choreography and production aesthetics, alongside industry skills such as collaboration, marketing and communication, funding/budgeting and project management. In collaboration with lecturers the students will perform a live show of their own creation in an external venue.

Trimester 6
1. The Makings Of A Stage Show
I believe this is similar to a core unit being suggested but that scale of a large collaborative gala could draw upon all practical dance/singing skills, writing/choreography, collaborative skills across disciplines in the live/digital space as well as performance and rehearsal etiquette.

(Julia N)
Creative skills within the Entertainment Industries for the invention of new work fall under writing, arranging, producing, choreography, digital capture and design. The following units are suggested so that creatives can be self-sufficient in their personal projects or develop an eye and vocabulary to communicate with professionals in that feel to achieve their creative goals.

Tri 1 (dominantly discipline based trimester)
N/A
Tri 2 (dominantly discipline based trimester)
N/A

Tri 3
1. Music Production
Familiarity with music production software and technologies provides a means of creating new content without the requirement of playing an instrument or having an extensive musical background. Production is a critical skill within the music entertainment industry and is a valuable additional skill for artists and freelancers. This unit will explore basic functions of a DAW, EQ-ing, Mixing, Mastering and principles of electronic composition for projects such as sample flipping and full length digital compositions. Skills in this unit are prerequisites for Studio and Professional Practice, Industry and Original Content, and, Integrated Digital Performance units.

2. Music and Lyrics: Songwriting and Performance
Alongside production, songwriting is a valuable additional skill for vocalists and performers who wish to create their own work and express themselves through music and lyrics. This unit will explore song writing styles across various genres, lyric and music style formats and associated instrumentation, marketability and the modern context for songwriters as singer-songwriters or freelance composers. Skills in this unit are prerequisites for Studio and Professional Practice and, Industry and Original Content units.

3. Capture and Creative Suite
The digital space (Media and Entertainment Industry) is made up of sight and sound. Music production and songwriting engage the creative capture and development of auditory storytelling while Capture and Creative Suite aims to introduce students to recorded visual storytelling. The unit will explore the basic functions of a DSLR or Mirrorless camera and other capture technologies considered to be "accessible" as well as filming/photography techniques, planning/story-telling and execution and editing techniques in applications such as Premiere Pro (or Final Cut), /Photoshop. An awareness of photography/videography/visual-storytelling/editing are valuable skills when generating visual representations of your work for creative or promotional purposes and is an additional freelance industry (the unit will provide the foundation for future learning). Skills in this unit will assist in the successful completion of the Integrated Digital Performance and Media, Marketing and Promotions units.

Tri 4
1. Digital Content Design (originally I was proposing this as an entire unit to introduce students to various design technologies and techniques for creating effective digital and print visuals (posters, flyers, logos etc) but after speaking with Adam from Aruga he believes a basic introduction to marketing/design technologies such as canva can be included in the marketing unit. Perhaps this spot could be used for one of the Cultural units proposed?)

2. Performance Aesthetics
Lighting, Costume, Makeup and Set Design all fall under the visual aesthetics performers use to add to the experience of their live or digital performances and utilise in their presence on various medias. In this unit students will be introduced to the fundamentals for effective design across the four domains including technologies, techniques and terminology so that students can design their own performance aesthetics or communicate effectively with professionals they wish to collaborate with. This unit supports creative decision making in their performance discipline units Integrated Digital Performance and Industry and Original Content.

Tri 5
1. Studio and Professional Practice
Utilising skills from the Music Production and Songwriting units students will be introduced to the professional requirements and practices of Studio and Session work. Singing, musicianship, writing and productions skills will be re-contextualised for the recording studio environment which is a necessary part of today's Music Industry. Considered to be a confronting and 'hostile' environment for new artists students will explore best practice, writing and recording strategies and experience professional interaction with an engineer or producer for three different styles of recording (original, cover and demo) through a series of lectures, workshops and assessments. Exposure to this environment will be an asset to budding entertainers throughout their careers.

(Julia N)
Tri 4:
1. Artistic Practice
Who am I as an artist? What is artistic practice? How do I work within my industry? This unit explores the neuroscience of skills development/habit formation, the implementation/measurement of practise of cerebral and practical skills, defining success and exploring our needs and wants as creatives.

Tri 6: (could be in any trimester but I am suggesting at least the second year of the degree due to the development students will experience physically/mentally after their first year of study)
The Evolving Lens: Meaning, Culture and Community
The Entertainment Industries are often settings trends but must take into account the relevant cultural and contextual lens their consumers may be viewing content with. While identifying these lens' can be of benefit from a marketing perspective a unit which challenges perspective or teaches skills for investigating and identifying these lens' would be of benefit for future entertainers whether they wish for their creative process to challenge or comfort consumers of different communities or backgrounds. This skillset would also assist in exploring artistic expression with sensitivity and awareness. While this unit is not something I have fleshed out as yet, I do think it is well worth establishing to foster the connection of art and community/expression and perspective.

N.B Dance and Song Units
All of the dance and song units in Tri 1 and 2 explore the cultural and contextual significance of the style studied and the communities they are connected. Music/Dance and culture is inextricably linked and so I would suggest that this remain a facet of the theory as students engage each vocal/dance unit.

Business and Commercial skills for the entertainment industry are absolutely crucial to have a presence or maintain a career in the current climate. The following units are suggested to develop complementary skills for Entertainers.

Core 1: Building a contemporary performing arts career

Future Contemporary Arts careers require substantial writing and research skills as artists are increasingly responsible for multiple phases of production and project execution. This unit introduces students to develop research and communication skills in conjunction with the theory and application of entrepreneurial skillsets and digital technologies in a scaffolded framework that steps students through a process of researching, developing and justifying a concept career plan

Core 2: Integrity and creative choices

This unit develops students' ethical approaches to their individual arts practices, workplaces and institutions. Through this unit, students will be challenged to develop policies and practices that promote individual and workplace wellness and resilience. Further deepening understanding, students will have the added experience of close collaboration and observation of the creative practices and policies within the Signature Showcase (30cp) in final trimester.

Core 3: How productions work

Contemporary careers require broad and coherent knowledge of practice that includes production processes (including pre and post production), students are tasked with contributing to the production and logistics of the Signature Showcase. This unit positions students to collaborate and support the senior cohort performances through implementation, design, logistics, event management & Marketing; fostering professional and creative connections, while also working with an experienced production manager, thereby developing fundamental skills in and knowledge of collaborative professional protocols and etiquette. The practical experience involved will inform creative practice well beyond the scope of the assessment as well as provide students operational and anticipatory knowledge of their final year of study. Additionally, this unit is a deeply interdisciplinary experience that mixes students from all three degrees in a professional context, fostering interdisciplinary knowledge before students are tasked with selecting ID electives and unit work in their following year. Culturally, this also wraps the entire study body around a singular project goal improving collegiality.

Core 6: The business of show business.

Students apply all they know of their practice in the development of a fully realised business and career plan. While this unit asks a lot of students in terms of assessment content, the new knowledge encompasses key skills in business management, profitability, simple tax accounting, contracts, and insurance. Effectively, tasks students with wrapping their immediate career objectives with an actionable plan.

"Technology, social trends and evolving consumer tastes are transforming arts and entertainment at their core. The new cultural and creative industries are making fresh demands of the creative workforce and the educational institutions preparing the next generation of creatives. The 21st century demands new modes of bachelor's degrees which address new forms of creativity and integrates new ways of learning about the live and digital entertainment industries.

The APAC degrees are new degrees for the next generation of Australian creatives and designed with acute and realistic understandings of the business fundamentals of the new cultural and creative industries. The industry realities embraced include the precarious nature of creative work, 'the long tail' of income across the creative sector, and the need for broad and flexible skill sets to support a long-term and economically viable portfolio career. Graduates are skilled to transfer careers across multiple industries and sectors. The values of sustainability, adaptability, creative problem solving, and artistic entrepreneurialism all underpin APAC degrees to fashion viable life-long creative careers, rather than pursue a 'starry-eyed' flirtation with fame that all too frequently burns out within a decade.

Our degrees straddle local and global conceptual and practical terrain to attract thoughtful students seeking to pursue practice-based learning alongside conceptual knowledge. For international students a standard duration program (3 years full time) may be considered to enable international students to become familiar with Australian performance and cultural contexts.

The APAC undergraduate degrees provide broad, coherent, and foundational professional programs to grow the human infrastructure necessary for Australia's vibrant cultural and creative industries. It addresses the fundamental skills, habits of mind and aesthetic sensibilities necessary for graduates to commence their long-term career in the creative sector. APAC offers fast-track degrees for long-term careers in the new cultural and creative industries."

To realise this vision for the Entertainment Management stream APAC's curriculum designers...
