In my city, sometimes you can only see a few stars and planets with unaided eyes at night. And sometimes you will see nothing even with a clear night sky.

I took this photo with 3-4 mins exposure time, so I was able to capture a few more stars. "The sauce pan" circles around Polaris due to Earth's rotation. So when I took this photo at around 11 pm, the sauce pan moved above Polaris. 

When I took this photo, I couldn't see many stars with my eyes. But thanks to technology, my phone captured a lot of them. This is the first time I photographed that many stars (It's impossible in my city). The UBC Rose Garden still has some street and outdoor light. I wonder what the sky would look like if all lights were turned off. 🤔

This is a pretty classic city view at night in my hometown, where there's busy traffic on both directions, and giant street lights are lined up on the side. 

The picture presents a bustling view of the city night, but the different forms of light pollution are also appearing obvious. While we may be used to the headlights of cars and consider them an assurance for safety (which is somewhat true), the glare is actually a common component of light pollution. Such excessive brightness can cause visual discomfort, which may act in a counterproductive way and increase the risk of car accidents. The glare from car lights and street lights may also impair drivers' vision in the long term. More importantly, they block the real view of the dark sky.

This shot is just a miniature of many cosmopolitan cities around the world. The city lights may be too usual in our lives to be noticed, but in fact, the light pollution does require awareness and attention.

How long have we not been able to see the stars hidden behind the glare... This past summer has been a wonder for star gazing in my backyard even with the smoke of wildfires& light pollution every night. But more and more neighbours in spanking new (not used, nothing thrifty here...) luxury houses are installing high voltage house lamps and surveillance cameras. I was on the roof garden of a residential building, trying to take a night sky view of Malaysia. It was 9:30 pm, and the city lights were still on. The bright light of Twin tower, KL tower, Pavilion shopping mall, and TRX are shining to the sky. I checked on the internet, and it said the light wil be turned off at midnight. Although this is a typical city skyline, this raises my attention to light pollution. It was around 8pm in the evening. Punta del Este is a smaller beach town in Uruguay and is very quiet in the winter months, the streets do not have many street lights and light pollution was minimal. It was pitch black and my flash on my phone was turned on to capture a few stars. Without the flash there was even more stars. This is quite an interesting and somewhat paradoxical(?) view of the night. When I looked up at the sky, I saw a few stars vaguely twinkling, but sadly and obviously, what I noticed more were the two lines of strong glare crossing each other... which were caused by the street lamps on pedestrian walk. In reality, the stars were even more vague and harder to see with human eyes.
