Palacio, the main character in the story is August Pullman.  Auggie is a deformed kid that gets bullied throughout most of the story.  Auggie is funny and hard-working.  He never resorts to violence or any form of bullying no matter how much kids make fun of him.  For example, as stated in the text, "... I just kind of randomly said: 'Did you know the guy who created Uglydolls based them on me?'," (Palacio, page 209).  When Auggie told this 'joke' to Maya, Maya didn't laugh at first.  She didn't know whether she should be laughing at that comment or not!  However, after Auggie started laughing, Maya started laughing, too.  Soon enough, both of them were laughing hysterically together.  In addition, as also stated in the text, "... 'this year I am very proud to award the Henry Ward Beecher medal to the student whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts.  So will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?,' " (Palacio, page 304).  Despite everything that has happened to him this year, this was the year Auggie finally triumphed.  He overcame everything, and showed bravery and commitment to his new school!  Furthermore, Summer Dawson is another important main character in the story.  She is kind and creative.  For example, as stated in the text, "I sat with him that first day because I felt sorry for him," (Palacio, page 119).  On Auggie's first day of school, he sat alone at a table during lunch.  Summer didn't want him to feel lonely so she joined him when no one else wanted to.  She was very nice to him and made him feel as welcome as possible to Beecher Prep.  In addition, as also stated in the text, " But I was really, really thrilled when Mr. Tushman called out Summer's name for the gold medal in creative writing," (Palacio, page 302).  Summer is  a very fun girl, no one should be surprised that she won this award!  I can definitely see Summer writing a book in the future.  As you can see, these two main characters show a lot of their positive character traits throughout the story.]]> 2018-03-06 16:44:09 UTC https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/238725339 jcassella https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/239242427        In the realistic fiction novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, I would rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.  Let me start off by saying, I loved that each section of the book was about a different character giving their perspective of the story.  This helps me understand the different sides of the story.  Also, I liked the story line that Palacio made up.  It's very interesting and the characters react exactly the way they should react to the main conflict.  However, I wish she would've included a section for Mr. Tushman.  I really wanted to find out his point of view about Auggie and his inside thoughts.  As a result, I give the novel Wonder 4 out of 5 stars total. ]]> 2018-03-09 16:56:13 UTC https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240254788 jcassella https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240496762       In the realistic fiction novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, the main characters are August, Jack, Summer, Julian, August's mom and dad, and Via.  August Pullman has had a hard life.  This particular kid was born with a birth defect.  He's had to go through many surgeries as a child.  This meant that in order to recover he had to be home schooled.  However, once he was fully recovered his parents insisted that he should go to a public school.  Auggie didn't want to go, but if he wanted a social life, did he really have a choice?  After that, before school started, a few students named Charlotte, Julian, and Jack showed Auggie around his new school: Beecher Prep Middle School.  Then, on the first day of school... something weird happened.  A girl named Summer actually sat with Auggie during lunch.  Soon enough, Auggie had become friends with Summer and Jack.  Later in the school year, during Halloween, something traumatic happened.  With his costume on, Auggie eavesdropped on Jack and Julian's conversation and could not believe what he was hearing.  Right in front of Auggie, Jack said, '... and I really think... if I looked like him, seriously, I think that I'd kill myself.'   Jack was confused when Auggie stopped talking to him since he didn't realize that Auggie had heard him talking behind his back.  However, Jack was determined to become friends with Auggie again, and when Julian said something mean about Auggie to Jack, Jack couldn't help but punch him in the face!  Of course, he got in trouble with the principal, Mr. Tushman, got detention, and got suspended for his actions.  Although, in the end, Jack and Auggie became friends again!  Next, came the 5th grade Broarwood Nature Reserve field trip!  Auggie was really excited, especially since Julian wasn't coming.  He thought it was "dorky."  Furthermore, during the trip, Auggie and Jack encountered a group of 7th graders that were constantly punching, kicking, and harassing them!  Luckily, they were saved by Amos, Miles, and Henry.  Once they got back from the trip, everybody was talking about the incident, talking about Auggie.  There was a seismic change ever since they got back from the trip.  Also, Julian was out of the loop and became less popular since he wasn't there!  Eventually, Mr. Tushman found out about the incident that had occurred on the field trip.  While Auggie and Mr. Tushman talked, they connected more, opened up more.  They talked about everything that had happened to Auggie in just one school year!  Even better, since Daisy had passed, Auggie's family surprised him with a brand new dog!  Everything was finally starting to turn around for Auggie.  Finally, it was graduation day - it was the end of the school year at last.  This was a great day and nothing could be going better, until Auggie received the biggest award yet: the Henry Ward Beecher medal!  This was the day August Pullman could never be more happier.  Everybody loved him and he'd made so many new friends!  In conclusion, this was the summed up plot line of Wonder.    ]]> 2018-03-10 21:30:09 UTC https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240496762 jcassella https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240503684 2018-03-10 23:13:45 UTC https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240503684 jcassella https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240676804 2018-03-12 02:38:43 UTC https://padlet.com/jcassella/q28sfqeoxnxn/wish/240676804
