Rubrics give a wide criteria as to what is expected as a whole/group , a Shared understanding among students who are given the assessment , Educators who are giving the assessments to the students and the parents who receives the results. Rubrics also help educators see where students may need help in areas they maybe struggle and less help in areas they are successful in.

an example of a rating scale would be like we use at my daycare center in my classroom we use a Ages and stages rating scale , it is use to see where the child is at academically if they meet the criteria of all the age appropriate things. the document has different questions that your suppose to see if the child can do various things " can you bring mrs. Dee the ball" an if they can you would then mark yes or no and a #.

a disadvantage to rubrics would be the design of them. some are very difficult to understand because of the layout. some rubrics have to much information and not straight to the point.
