I/E block is going to be beneficial for all students because it will be a chance to perform more intensive instruction for students and all teachers will have more time to meet with each student whether it’s one-on-one or a small group. I also learned that the I/E block does not have to be a small group each day, instead, it can be a whole group. It is also important to make sure that your data backs up what you are doing during your I/E block.

As a first time teaching assistant I had a pretty good idea of what I thought was expected and needed of my role in the classroom and to the students and staff. But when I left today I left with a 100% confidence boost that we all play a major role to the success of our students and I now have the tools and knowledge to help our students learn, grow and succeed. The presentation on how trauma affects kids in school really opened my eyes to the reality of how important our jobs are. The strategies that stood out the most to me that I will be sure to implement in this school year are Emotional Check-In and classroom environments.

The training emphasized the importance of collaboration and clear communication between all educators, including both certified teachers and paraeducators. One key takeaway was the understanding that while the teacher leads the academic and behavioral instruction, the teacher assistant's role is equally critical in supporting individualized needs and ensuring that the child’s learning environment is conducive to their unique learning styles. Teacher assistants are often the ones providing one-on-one support, fostering social skills, and offering the emotional encouragement necessary for these students to thrive.

I learned that thorough lesson planning is important for teachers, as it directly impacts the quality and effectiveness of instruction. First, it ensures that objectives are clear. Planning helps teachers define specific learning goals, aligning lessons with curriculum standards and student needs. Also, planning maximizes time as a well-structured plan optimizes classroom time, balancing instruction, activities, and assessment. Most importantly, it supports differentiation. Planning helps teachers to incorporate strategies for varied learning styles, abilities, and interests. This ensures inclusivity and keeps all students engaged.

As the Veteran EC Resource Teacher here at J.W. Coon and this year we are now required to push-in the classrooms, to assist not only our IEP students but also our Tier 2 and Tier 3 students (as defined by the MTSS framework), this past System Wide Professional Development (SWPD) was very informative for me. Going into a deep dive of what co-teaching and station teaching looks like, I now have a better insight into what to expect going into this new school year.

These two teaching models are very beneficial when striving to close the learning gaps, differentiate instruction, and intensify support of those students in need. Tier 2 and 3 students often require more tailored instruction to meet where they are struggling compared to their peers. Stations allow teachers to group students by need and provide targeted practice or remediation for various CORE subjects. Having our students work in smaller groups allow for more direct teacher interaction and individualized feedback. While one group works directly with a teacher, other groups are engaged in meaningful independent or peer-based tasks.

Finally, having small-group time will allow for informal assessments, observations, or collecting of data that can be utilized if that student is being moved forward to obtain an IEP. However, the goal is to give each student that extra support to reduce their Tier from 3 and 2, down to Tier 1. So overall, the SWPD was a plus for me!

This week’s professional development sessions were incredibly informative and impactful as I prepare for my new role as K-2 EC Resource Teacher, this school year. I had the opportunity to dive into two of the three curriculum programs I’ll be using: Let’s Go Learn and Do The Math. Both sessions were valuable, especially as someone transitioning from an EC self-contained setting into a more inclusive role supporting general education students with IEPs.

The Let’s Go Learn training helped me understand how to use diagnostic data to drive instruction and provide targeted support. I now feel more equipped to interpret student data and use it to individualize learning paths that meet each student’s unique needs. Similarly, the Do The Math session gave me a clearer understanding of how to approach math intervention with structure and intentionality, which is crucial for building foundational skills and filling in learning gaps.

Because this curriculum is new to me, I appreciated the opportunity to explore how these tools are designed to support students with disabilities in a general education setting. I can already see how implementing them will positively impact student progress.

In addition to curriculum training, I also attended a session on co-teaching models. This was particularly helpful as I’ll be collaborating closely with general education teachers. I learned about various co-teaching approaches and how each model can be used effectively to support both educators and students. Understanding when and how to use these strategies will be essential in creating a seamless and supportive learning environment.

And on a fun note — while it’s not something I “learned,” I was excited to win a \$50 Target gift card for retaining knowledge from the Let’s Go Learn session!

Overall, the sessions this week were engaging, practical, and gave me the confidence I need to step into this new role with clarity and purpose. I’m feeling better prepared and motivated to make a positive impact this school year.
