The jump from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a very expensive and hard jump to make given that most cars, trains and plains run on some kind of fossil fuel. To have most transportation go green it would take billions of dollars and decades to make the reverse.

Fossil fuels are already established as a massive source of energy especially in the US, it has been working for the past couple centuries. Fossil fuels are very efficient in creating energy, not that must is needed to create a lot of energy. Fossil fuels are very energy dense because they come from deposits of carbon created by death animals and things that were once living. Fossil fuels are ready made, in the sense that just because it took millions of years to make them doesn't mean we can't use them now. They have to be used at some point and what is the point of just letting them sit there.

One of the big problems with fossil fuels is that they are non-renewable or in our lifetimes for that matter, which means once they are used up, we can no longer make more. So, running out means that is it, and we would have to find an alternative. Running out is not really a problem we will have to face for generations because there are so many massive oil reserves that the US has just saved up, so instead we buy gas from other countries to have this as a backup for generations later.
