I’m Matthias, an expert in transformation consulting with a strong focus on AI. At SPORTFIVE in Germany, I drive business innovations and the integration of AI into our organization. My background is broad when it comes to digital technologies, always aiming to make processes more efficient and create new business opportunities. Over the years, I have conceptualized and implemented various club apps, bringing digital solutions directly to fans.

Technology and sports have always been a passion of mine—both professionally and personally. Growing up in the Ruhr area, football was always a big deal, shaping my social environment and countless discussions. Ironically, I’m not great at playing football myself—my skills are much better suited for handball.

Through this course, I hope to gain deeper insights into cutting-edge technologies shaping the sports industry, exchange ideas with like-minded professionals, and explore innovative applications that could redefine our business.

Fun fact: My other great passion besides football is live music. For both, I have no problem sacrificing sleep—even if it means crashing on hard benches in airports (like Heathrow after the 2024 Champions League final) or train stations (like after Bruce Springsteen in Leipzig 2013).

During my PhD at the Center for Sports and Management (WHU) I am especially focusing on how sports organizations can keep a balance between sports and entertainment while strengthening both areas without neglecting the other. In my personal life sports has always played a key role. I love road and gravel cycling, currently preparing for a 800km bikepacking race in the Catalan Pyrenees in June.

My name is Stephan and I work as Head of IT at Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA.

I am responsible for servers and infrastructure (including server and client management), technology and networks (including match day support and stadium communications infrastructure), software development (e.g. data hub), IT project management and sports IT (sports data hub).

My interest in technology and sports?

They are my hobby and my profession. I have always done sports and/or followed various sports intensively. And IT has been with me since childhood (C64, Amiga, etc. pp.).

My expectations of the course?

New perspectives, interesting facts and inspiration for my work at BVB.

A fact about me?

When I'm at home, I can turn off the computer, look forward to my family and reading “analog” US comics (I don't have a digital subscription at Marcvel/DC). And when the weather is nice, I look forward to motorcycle tours (without GPS/cell phone).

At the DFL, which is responsible for organising and marketing Germany's two highest football leagues, I am in charge of club communications (especially with regard to all content-related topics). Hi everyone, I'm Vincent, Senior Consultant in the Connected Products & Services practice of Capgemini Invent.

Sports has always been a key part of my life, whether as a fan or active player. Working for a global digital and transformation company, I am confronted with new technologies and its application in different contexts on a daily basis. I am now trying to bridge my passion and profession within my current role.

I'm hoping that this course will be a starting point to gain a better understanding on the perspectives, approaches and challenges that sports giants like BVB are facing in the application and implementation of digital technologies.

my name is Sven and I am a Technical Project Manager from Kiel, Germany.

I have studied Industrial Egineering with focus on control systems before I started my professional career in the field of land vehicles.

My favorite sport is baseball (quite unusual for a german, I know) but I am also interested in international soccer.

*Truthfully, I do not follow the results/standings of any sports closely. The only sporting event I routinely watch is the Super Bowl – and mostly for the funny commercials! I do find the technologies behind sports quite fascinating and applicable to work and daily life. Because of the vast sums of money associated with sports, that industry is able to spend significant amounts of money to gain advantages in competition. These cutting-edge technologies can work their way into the lives of regular people as well as into other industries like defense.

*I am hoping to expand my horizons and understanding of other technologies from the course materials. Most of my focus has been on direct technologies in use by the products we are developing. I wish to learn about technologies used in sports such as AI and online communications methods/mediums will hopefully give us more options to better engage with our customers, end users and the public. I am also hoping to meet other members of the Rheinmetall family and look for opportunities to collaborate.

*I have always loved armored vehicles and military technologies. I frequently focus my vacations around visiting military museums to learn history and about engineering technologies/techniques on past vehicles.

My name is Joss and I lead the Operations Quality teams here at RDA. I come from a mechanical and industrial engineering background and migrated from France to Australia in 2014 while working for Volvo Group.

I am a road runner, currently training to break the 20-minute 5K step! I was racing motocross in my younger years and played rugby for some years too.

I am currently learning about and experiencing with AI both through sport (e.g. training) and professional development.

I am keen to learn more about technology in sport. I see a massive potential with AI as a support for example for arbitration (ability to monitor players behaviours) and judging (AI could learn and judge e.g. dance performances, either by itself or providing guidance and another opinion).

I expect this course will take me through more examples and options on how AI can be used. I hope to be able to derive from my learnings to support work and my professional development, as well as business opportunities.

Fun fact: I came to Australia for 2 years to improve my english skills, but ended up staying here and calling Brisbane home.
